Computer Specs for Editing 4k Footage?

The way RAID5 work is that it puts bits of your data across all disks. It then also puts the information on how to rebuild each of the disks across the other disks which is where you get your redundancy if one drive fails. This means that there is not 2 copies of your data in the RAID. It also means that each disk is useless if it is not part of the RAID.

Swapping disks will not give you any free space, it will just rebuild the data that was on the drive that you replaced.

Obviously, if you need to free up space you can delete footage from old, completed projects but again as Olof mentioned it is always best to have a copy as client will always lose thiers and come back to you down the track.

Hopefully this clears things up a bit.

Cheers

Andrew

Ok ok. So on top of getting a RAID as a working drive I should also get myself a normal casing that I would use to upload backups onto, swapping each drive as one gets filled up and stored somewhere.

I can delete completed projects on the RAID as the backup will be stored somewhere else anyways. Ok sounds like a plan.

Now onto research on casing and reliable drives... you guys are saying Seagate?

I use a 2TB gdrive to keep my live backups on. That way I have the files on my raid as well as on the external gdrive. When the project is over I then save the backup on to another even less exspensive HHD. Try to always keep your drives/raid under a 70% capacity or even less. Once you start to fill up your drive space you could take a little hit on performance.

My pc is due for a tune up - going to base the new build on a Asus motherboard featuring 2x 20Gbit/s TB2 ports.
A fair amount cheaper than the high end RAID card route and will future proof for non storage TB devices - 4K displays etc.
If anyone is interested I will post the progress/results.

I'm also building a new machine. Thinking about a gtx 780 card vs a quatro 4000 . any thoughts? are the 780s in the cuda / mercury engine list for premiere cc? I'm currently using cs 6 on a pc but thinking of going CC with the new machine.

I'm specifically looking to get my timeline stretched out to 2 1920x1080 (Asus) monitors and also have the project window out to a 45 inch sanyo tv. doable with a 780?

Marino215 I see that you posted you had the 780ti, that is $700. Would it be worth it for me to just get two GTx 770? Would save $50. Not really great with computers anymore so I'm just wondering if there is a reason not to run two cards SLI instead of one higher end card.
