CompUSA is shutting down

Good riddance. They were a terrible retailer. Overpriced. Horrible customer service. Bait and switch experts.

Mind you, we need competition. I can't imagine how horrible it would be if all we had as choices were Best Buy. It's just that CrapUsa wasn't it.

I expect Circuit City is next. Also a worthless chain. Not as bad as CrapUsa, but close.

Yeah, I never had a good experience at CompUSA.

Maybe it's not viable, and I guess they just want out of that business, but it seems like they could leverage the name and go New-Egg with it, only online and re-build the business that way.

CompUSA was good for when you needed something PRONTO. Neither Circuit City nor Best Buy carries the breadth of items that CompUSA does.

Yours must be different than ours.

Over here, Circuit City and Best Buy have a much broader range of items- furniture, home entertainment systems, toys, cameras, books, movies, etc. Best Buy, especially, seems like it's turning into Target with a focus on electronics.

In my area, Compusa does have a slightly better chance of having a certain computer part/peripheral, but that's about it. I usually found myself having to go to Newegg anyway.

I'm with David on this one. If I HAD to have a computer part I went to CompUSA at the top of my block because they did have a much larger selection of computer equipment then any other store in my area.

Before I found MicroCenter, Compusa was the only place I could find people who knew macs, or that had any Mac stuff. I always had a good expereince there.

I meant for computer parts and products.

Frys opened in Atlanta just before Compusa made it's exit here. Compusa's been going downhill for years. Circuit City made news last year for firing all of it's "associates" who had been around long enough to know anything.

Me: Do you have any CD players?
CC: What's a CD player?
Me: [goes home and orders a CD player from Amazon.]

Having worked for CompUSA at one of the their ever-changing ad agencies, I can say this comes as no surprise. Well, I am surprised it didn't happen sooner. Their HQ (about 10 minutes from where I live) looked like Dilbert had exploded inside. Gray everything, boxes everywhere. And no one had a clue. They spent months tweaking their Sunday circular as if that was the reason everyone was fleeing them for Best Buy, CC, Frys and the rest.

Until the recent Mac explosion CompUSA was the only choice for getting anything Mac where I used to live, but with Fry's in town now I don't get how anyone other than Best Buy can stay in business.

Good! CompUSA had good selection but were sleazy because they always tried to push some bullsh*t Compusa warranty plan on you. My poor mother who is not very computer savy (but knows enough to get extended warrantys for big ticket items), bought a REALLY nice Apple Macbook Pro from compusa, and they asked if she wanted an extended warranty on her Apple. She said yes, and when her computer needed repair, she called apple and they couldn't find her warranty. Turns out that they had not sold her the extended warranty for her apple but instead sold her their computer warranty plan which is pretty much crap.

My mom should have double checked but they chose their words very carefully to mislead her into thinking she was getting the normal warranty and not some knockoff. Oh well. Turns out they paid in the end.

Although I was away from home living in GA when this happened, I still hold a grudge because I remember her calling me all confused and upset about it. I gotta have my mother's back!

Goodbye CompUSA.
