Compression artifacts in AVCHD 1080p24

I have a GH1 that is not hackable. I noticed that in scenes where a large portion of the image is moving quickly (including camera shake when fully zoomed in), compression artifacts appear when shooting in AVCHD 1080p24. Is there anything I can do to avoid this?

gh1 is a funny thing. buy one too old and there's the old sensor with garbage FPN/banding. buy one too new and you can't hack. basically you need a gh1 that was built sometime from early this year or possibly late last year up until around june of this year. small window of 5 or 6 months

I haven't found the 720p60 mode to have this same problem - has anyone else had problems there? I think if I'm shooting anything that I can't redo, I'll go with 720p60 to avoid the possible artifacts.

And if a hacked GH1 appears on eBay I'll be all over it. Unless anyone reading this is willing to part with theirs.

Colton, those artefacts (usually called "mud") is the main thing the hack fixes and is the main reason why hacked footage looks so much better so getting a hacked cam is definitely the way to go.

Here's an example if you haven't seen such samples already:

see the disgusting mud everywhere? this was taken from this previous thread on the topic:

also, keep checking ebay but more importantly keep checking the marketplace forum of this very site as people are constantly selling hacked gh1's there. in fact i think there was just 2 on there a day or two ago

I have yet to see any solid evidence that older GH1 cameras have any worse banding than newer models. I have two GH1's, one that originally came with firmware v1.1 and the other with v1.2. After hacking them both, neither camera's videos look worse than the other's to my eyes.

I'll keep looking for a hackable one. In the meantime, do you think the 720p60 recording quality setting has less mud?

As found and discussed since a year ago the 720 encoding is a lot less prone to break at fast changes in the image than the 1080. Bummer that you couldn't find a hackable one.

I own the absolutely first GH1 that was delivered here in Sweden last summer and have very little FPN. Check the videos in my sig if you don't believe me.

I have a cam that came as 1.2 ( the mythical $566 thiside1 cams) and another one due to land in a couple days, and I must say the banding is pretty damn bad. It makes underexposed shots almost completely unusable (which means anything shot in low light, because there are always going to be some underexposed areas). I'm kinda hoping it gets better over time, that the other body is better, and that I can do something about it in post.

On the other hand these cams are a ridiculously good deal, so unless the game changes significantly between now and early 2011 these are going to become great Bcams for an AF100.

I have one of the first couple hundred GH1s sold in the US and I have FPN but only in the most extreme situations. I don't think there's an issue with earlier GH1s vs newer.

Um...If I remember correctly the issue of FPN was not due to how old your GH-1 was but it was based off which factory it was manufactured in. I've read in threads that those manufactured in Japan faired better than the ones manufactured in Taiwan. But...what do I know. Mine seems fine.

Oh....congrats on your find CColton.
