Comparison Video / Explanation: Canon Rebel T2i vs. Canon EOS 7D

5D and 7D output

5D and 7D output

Hi Everyone!

I own GH1 and I'm thinking about moving to Canon 550D or 7D and I wonder whether what you see on an external monitor is the same thing you see on the camera screen.
Is the refresh rate on the monitor the same when you record video?
Is the resolution the same? I've read in this thread that the output (to the monitor) from 550d is 720p and the output from 7D is a bit bigger. Is it much easier to pull the focus with 7D than with 550D?

The 5D and 7D ONLY output 480i which is NTSC SD out.

OK, Phillip Bloom gets a bare T2i (550D), 2 lenses of his choice each under $400, and a tripod like a Libec TH 650DV, something with an acceptable, but non-professional, fluid head.

No rigs, hoods, steadicams, finders, external monitors. A Zoom H2N for sound would be OK with me...

A minute finished would be great...

Artists often say they like to work with limitations, so there we go... I'd put money on it being nice.

This is weird. I'm a muso who's going to video. So I know all the guitar Jargon with the pickups etc. I currently have a GT8 Fx processor which I plug in my home made guitar into. I don't have the $ to get my Sunburst Les Paul Classic yet, or my ESP with passive EMGs.

So I understand all that but the lens info has me gobsmacked. I'm a super newb. I started my film work on a Fugi Finepix S5500.

After reading all this, I dare say the T2i is the one for me. That and getting an medium awesome lens or 3. Then, when the 8D or what ever comes out, I might upgrade to that.

Afterall, I will be upgrading from the Sanyo WH1.

I dare say I won't be able to contribute at all here since I know nothing compared to you guys.

Although if anyone needs screenwriting advice, I'm awesome there.

I'd give him a finder.

No way, we want to see what Joe Sixpack who's on a budget could do with this camera who's never been on DVXUser and has never heard of this "finder" of which you speak.

In fact maybe we should stick to just the kit lens with the T2i...

Teach us oh Jedi Traumabunny! Teach us! Indie film where you put? Vimeo? UUTube? Farmville?

No longer lyrn frm ancient wisdom of corporate shooters, NO!

Yr wysdom will be etched on DVX for all to see for generations to come!

More! It's funnier than the Daily Show! I no longer need to learn from those more knowledgeable than me! I can just shoot my skateboard videos and soon be doing Avatar! Who knew? Imagination and a few friends to work for free will make the next great indie smash! Every Blair Witch wannabee has been successful! Who knew? And a small loan from dad and mom for the gear. Since there's no jobs out there...

But seriously, I've been shooting with both an HMC 150 and a T2i now, just bought the T2i last month. I love both for different reasons. They are both tools first and foremost. The HMC allows me to do much easier work with a variety of situations, interviews, long takes of musicians with XLR feeds off the board (no I'm not a drummer but I used to be!). The T2i gives me incredible DOF that I cannot get with the 150. And it's like a notebook, I carry it with me almost everywhere, and can (and have) shot off the cuff when the need arises. So like any 'craftsman" I use that word with caution, I have multiple tools in the kit.

The only reason I would have loved to have bought the 7D is for the environmental protection. In the Pacific NW and many other jungle locations (where it rains alot), that casing is going to eventually be very important. But I will add another body, when it's needed. I wasn't sure I'd really shoot much with the T2i, but in fact it has become my A camera for most things. If you folks haven't seen the images of the 7D sitting in the snow in Sweden, you should go find it. Quite a dramatic reason to own the more expensive camera.

Did anyone ever come up with an actual challenge for Bloom? That whole part of the thread seems to have died...

Canon wrote me also that 7D (like 550D/T2i and 60D) just sends a 640x480 signal to HDMI while recording:

"Die EOS 7D gibt wie auch die anderen EOS-Modelle über HDMI die volle Auflösung aus, solange die Videoaufnahme nicht gestartet wurde. Sobald die Filmaufzeichnung läuft, erfolgt die Ausgabe mit 640 x 480 Pixel."

"EOS 7D provides like all other EOS models (T2i and 60D) full resolutions over HDMI, as long there is no video recording. As soon the recording starts, the output is 640x480 pixels."

and

"Bezüglich der HDMI-Ausgabe des Livebilds verhalten sich die EOS 7D, EOS 60D und auch die EOS 550D identisch. Erfolgt keine Aufnahme so wird die volle HD-Auflösung ausgegeben, während der Videoaufname steht lediglich eine geringere Auflösung zur Verfügung."

"Regarding HDMI-output of liveview EOS 7D, 60D and 550D behave identical. If there is no recording full HD-resolution will be output, during recording there is only lower resolution available."

Well Canon told you an absolute lie. I own a 7D and can tell you, it does NOT switch video mode when you press record. I know this because I use it ALL the time with a smallHD monitor and have never seen this happen. I know others see this with the 5dm2 and T2i so I cannot say there, but with the 7D there is NO question.

You should write them back and tell them they gave you FALSE information.

That I do not know. Given it is 1 processing chip (as the 7D has 2) I'd imagine it might switch just like the t2i/5dm2. Since these are out in the wild, I am sure someone here can give a definitive answer.

(Plus I have 60D, GH2 and AF100 specs floating all around in my head at the moment, probably some crossed wires in there!) :)

Given the 60D has an articulating screen, to me that is a huge plus. There are angles I've wanted to use my camera above and below me that have dictated using an external screen so I could frame the shot. With the 60D this would not be necessary.

Yes, this surely is a huge plus. The problem for me is whether it is possible to focus properly with nikkor lenses on this small articulating screen.

Well 2 things:

1. I use the 10x zoom to focus before starting record. I *think* this is 1:1 from the sensor, but in any case, when this is focused, it is perfect, and I do this on the little screen.

2. Nikkor lenses have a MUCH longer focus throw, so they are easier to focus in my opinion.
