GH2 comparison between GH2Stalin GOP3 "kae" and Original GH2

Post the Stream data from the shots. Then we can see if you did push the camera beyond the 24Mbit rate... even with the patch installed.
Cuz as much as you have may have intended to share with informative intentions... This is a waste without properly pushing the codec and/or showing a side by side comparisons.
Also the actual data rate helps us see the "picture" more clearly. Cuz if your pushing the camera's variable bit rate only to 24Mbits in all the shots... then its clearly not a true test of anything.
I look forward to seeing more tests and you testing the patches with informative data on the side.

It´s pretty easy to say " wrong subjects, wrong scene, you need more details in the shot, the codec must be more challenged, more contrast and shadows....etc." But what about doing such a test by your own? A request to all the guys who know it so well => please do us the favor and shoot a side-by-side comparison of these scenes and show us what you obviously see and a lot others do not...

great - thank you ;)

haha no prob!

joking aside though, now that you've run (somewhat limited tests according to the GH2 hack trolls standards) your comparisons, is it worth it for you to keep the hack or because of the similarities between non-hacked and hacked you'll just use stock firmware? I can see why some people are swearing by it if it does provide cleaner low light footage (even though if you are serious and filming something scripted you will freaking at least have one or two lights setup), but is it really worth it...for now at least?

I can't respond for Adam, but using myself the hacked gh2 (with Kae's patch) since two weeks or so just for testing and fun, i can't say for sure that the gain in quality is such an evidence that every user must hack it (unless you're a Pal user to get rid of the 30min limitation). The stock firmware can be enough - i.e. very good - for most situation : having no fictionnal project but mostly documentary stuff in mind, I will not use kae's patch or any extreme high bitrate until a rock solid stable setting is found (though it's seems that cbrandin and vitally research on the AVCHD will lead to a reasonable and somewhat stable improvment in a week or so.)

But for now, not for a serious job, it's a pleasure to use this patch. A colorist friend of mine who teach me some basic grading tricks seems to see a serious improvment in the hacked footages. I've done a test (ungraded for now, and with basic editing) to see the motion and low light ability of the patch. There is some issue (focusing, continuity... and so on) due to the poor operator behind the cam and PPro, but... I see something in motion that I like and can't resist to shoot with it every night ! :-)

Here's a video that clearly illustrates a serious problem with the low bitrate encoding in the unhacked GH2: http://vimeo.com/26862717

The above clip has been zoomed in post to make the problem really obvious. If you would like to download the original unzoomed clip it's at http://vimeo.com/27344090

and here's a clip that illustrates how the hack fixes the problem on a similar but not identical shot http://vimeo.com/26863464
Note that Vimeo's encoding adds it's own motion unevenness, so to see the true full improvement you have to download the the file.
