Comparing the new Metabones 'Speed Booster' adapter with 'The Original'

For the moment the file is still being processed by Vimeo. I think there is something wrong with the file... I'll try again uploading the file.
Sorry for the delay...

Yes it is possible... wait and see.
PS: The fact that there is glass added between the lens and the camera and that there is more (little more) detail... yes it can

How quick was the shipping from Metabones. Thanks for the information in the blogpost!

I ordered the morning of Monday 14th, the day it was released. It was shipped that day and received it in the morning on Friday the 18th in NYC. I was really impressed by how fast it shipped from Hong Kong. Part of the speed might have been that even though I ordered it very early in the morning on Monday it was able to be processed immediately in HK because of the time difference.

I have ordered many things from china before on ebay and usually they take at least 1.5-2 weeks if not more. I guess Metabones uses some fancy shipping. I just ordered a full frame 28-300 VC lens to use on it from KEH and it took about the same amount of time to arrive via fedex from Atlanta...

I'd be interested in seeing that.....I'm thinking that may kinda be against the laws of physics. If I'm not mistaken, an extender might increase your detail, not a reducer. (but then an extender would also introduce/exasurbate all the bad junk too,)

That is why I ordered one. Do not expect miracles, but it gives you more light and more detail.
Just read the technical document from the metabones website.

Its definitely not against the laws of physics. Remember we are comparing cropping the center 1/2 of the lens's intended imaging area (ff35 lens on s35) vs using the full intended imaging area (ff35 lens on ff35 or s35+sb).

Metabones Speed Booster question

Metabones Speed Booster question

Consider the following combination:

Sony NEX-FS100U Super 35mm Sensor Camcorder body:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/761578-REG/Sony_NEX_FS100U_NEX_FS100E_Super_35mm_Sensor.html

Metabones Canon EF Lens to Sony NEX Camera Speed Booster:

Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 Lens:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/680103-USA/Canon_2751B002_EF_70_200mm_f_2_8L_IS.html

Which lens functions can be controlled from the FS100 using this combination?

Aperature?

Auto Focus?

Zoom?

Image Stabilization?

Let me know what you find.

Aperture : YES
IS : YES but the on/off switch is on the lens, not on the camera.
Other : No.

Not at all. Say a lens resolve 4000 line pairs over the Full Frame 35mm image circle, when one crops that down to S35 size (about half the area) you get about 2000 line pairs as you are using half the image circle.

now if you use a secondary 'perfect' lens element to project that 4000 line pair image onto the S35 area you would have 4000 line pairs over the S35 area, ie doubled the resolution, now consider the secondary element is imperfect and introduces 10% resolution loss then you are down to 3600 line pairs over the S35 area.

3600 is more than 2000

Wow! No auto-focus option with this combo? That's depressing. I suppose it can't hurt to ask about other lenses. Do you know of any other DSLR lenses that might enable auto-focus with an FS100U Camera body and the Metabones Speed Booster adapter?

Hey stedtrak...not what you were wanting to hear, but the NEX mirrorless cameras can utilize the auto-focus function of the Canon lens with the SB adaptor.

Let me see if I'm reading this right:

According to Erwin Vanderhoydonks, the Canon Lens through a Metabones Speed Booster adapter on an FS100U Camera body enables Aperature and Image Stabilization control only.

You say NEX mirrorless cameras can utilize the auto-focus function of the Canon lens with the Speed Booster adaptor.

Actually this is exactly what I wanted to hear. The only trouble I have with both of these opionons is that they are mutually exclusive.

Can you elaborate more on yours?

Yes indeed, on the NEX mirrorless cameras you can utilize the auto-focus function of the Canon lens with the SB adaptor

But the original question was about the NEX FS100...There is no AutoFocus.

According to the Metabones website:

NEX-FS100 - Autofocus works only in photo mode, but is disabled in movie capture mode

or

On NEX camera bodies in camcorder form factor (e.g. FS series), autofocus may be available only in photo mode but not in movie capture mode

I checked the FS100 manual from top to bottom, but I couldn't find "photo mode" anywhere.

Whatever "photo mode" is, my camera doesn't appear to have it.
