Compact Jibs

ROCKMORE

Veteran
I work with jibs on almost all my shoots, but the units I have are all from the days of heavy camera loads. I needed a compact unit to have on hand all the time and built this test model. This unit was built in a basic shop. Although the design will change being produced on a CNC mill the basic configuration will stay the same. I have a production company is putting up the money for the first 2 machined production models. Any feedback welcome.

Superb looking design. I just ordered Kessler small unit, but would have considered yours. Do it.

What happens when the ground is uneven, and you need to have the legs slide to different lengths? I'm going to be shooting out in the desert next week, and it will involve getting some gear up on a rock with a very uneven surface. If the spreader was higher up instead of attached to the bottom of the legs...

How much will you be selling them for? Looking to buy one when they are ready :)

This is the rough configuration. The final design will have the option of a ball mount with a level or a flat bottom if it's mounted on a photo tripod base.

I don't know my manufacturing costs yet, but it will be a good deal. The unit is designed to be compact with a price within reach of start up productions. i will post the finished unit when it's done probably by June.

Thanks

Make sure it is not too HEAVY too!! as it should be compact and easy to set up right?

WOW, THAT THINGS BEAUTIFUL. I didn't expect to be as nice a design as it is. I built a jib that works ok, but it's no where near the quality of your design. Heck, when you get these going, Im happy to buy the prototype off of you. What's the ball park figure for one of these.

@ oldcorpse, Im guessing the spreader is removeable. You could even use a small three way chain about mid way up the sticks if you need it.

It's designed to be as light and as quick to set up as possible, but still strong enough to last a lifetime.
I work with jibs every day. Weight and set up time has always been a problem that these units solve a lot.
This unit has a full set of 12 ball bearings plus 4 bearings in the base so the movement is very smooth.
I have another smaller unit I designed for hiking and climbing. It was used last week up one of the 7 summits. I will post images from the climb when the climbing team returns next week, but the unit made the trek.

Below is a shot i took of the Baby Jib the day before it left for one of the 7 summits last week. It's a very basic construction in this test unit, I wanted to see how small and light I could make a functioning jib. The movement is only about 24 inches up and down which may seem too limited, but in my experience most of my shots move within that range. The manufactured design will have a similar configuration, but quite different looking. Also full retractable weight section.
