Own a Powerbook, but want Macbook Pro - P2 dilemma

so basically i want to upgrade to a new/used Macbook Pro (and i hear Apple's coming out with new versions in Oct). BUT, my current Powerbook (on the slow side -- 1.25 GHZ) has a P2 slot. i also own a 1.8 dual G5 which i'll be doing most of my editing on, unless my new Macbook Pro is faster for HD work....that's another story.

so should i keep my Powerbook with the P2 reader...and use my G5 for editing?
or buy a new/used Macbook Pro and use that for editing, but then i'll need to buy some sort of P2 reader/loader which will cost more money. hmmmmm. so, maybe i should keep my Powerbook then (since i could only sell it for $550 or so) for the P2 slot.

??????

any advice people would be much appreciated!!!
thanks,
e

i had a dual 2.0 G5 and i bought a core 2 duo 2.16 mbp and it kicked the G5's ass. i do all my work on my mbp now. from editing to 2d and 3d animation. a newer one would be much faster. but i'd say keep the powerbook for offloading. or you could get a duel systems adapter(whole nother set of issues there... but my 3rd one has been working fine.) but also, if it aint broke don't fix it. sounds like you have a pretty good setup as is right now. maybe just keep saving for support gear or something.

I'd keep the powerbook. It's the perfect match for P2 transfers and you won't get much for selling it anyway.

your macbook pro will smoke your G5. i did a side by side test with my QUAD 2.5 G5 and it beat the macbookPRO but only by a very slight margin. one that would likely be unnoticeable in day to day work. and my QUAD 2.5 G5 SMMMOKKES my DUAL 2.0 G5, which is faster than your DUAL 1.8 - so thats pretty much a no-brainer

BUT, i would keep your PCMCIA equipped old powerbook for P2 dumps. you can always use the duel adapter with your MBP but you often hear of issues with it. in well over a year in the field with my OLD powerbook G4 ive not had a single P2 transfer problem.

yeah sounds like i'll be keeping the 1.25 ghz Powerbook with the P2 reader, and buying a Macbook Pro. thanks! how many monitors can i use with the new Macbook Pro's, 2 right?
(i already have two that i'm using for my G5)

now i wonder if i should sell my 1.8 dual G5 -- could prob get 700 for it. hmmmmm.
3 macs seems like a lot.

Well two if you count the built-in display as one. There's only one DVI out.

damm, wish i could have two outs. means i might have to get a much bigger display then.
currently have two 21" LCD's.
a 15" and a 21" is not that much landscape.

One IMPORTANT issue in moving to a MacBook Pro is the version of FCP you have.

If it is earlier the FCP 5.1.x, it won't run on the MacBook Pro.

You need FCP 5.1.x or later; preferably FCS2.
