Color Filters

Hi,

if got some old color filters: red, green, blue, yellow...
I want to shoot some footage in black and white, so I thought maybe these filters help to enhance the black and white world, for example if I use a red one, the sky would be darker. but that's supposed go with analog photography.

I also couldn't test black and white pictures yet, because I've got no final cut, or anything like it, to handle the color management. I've got only microsofts movie maker:embarasse

will the filters have any effect? (better quality?)
or is it better to handle the colorstuff with final cut and just shoot straight without this filters?
I mean, I've got the filters, final cut will cost much more...

sorry for my bad english.

I'd leave desaturation to post. Though, with the DVX you can switch your viewfinder to monochrome (black and white) and get a great idea of what your footage will look like.

Also, if you're working on Windows Movie Maker, that means you're on a PC (running Windows). Unless you buy an Apple computer, you won't be able to move to Fnal Cut Pro (which is Mac only). If you are staying with a PC, you'll need to look at other editing programs like AVID, Premiere, Vegas, etc.

thanks, I will use the viewfinder, totally forgot that!
everyone tells me to buy final cut, no one mentioned that is for mac. actually I don't want to use the pc at all, but I need it for the cut.
I have the latest version of "lightworks", but I couldn't get it to work. The movie files won't be converted, I don't know why.
I use my camera like a super8, just cutting by not filming ^^
but now I plan a documentary and I have to cut some scenes and create some images in black and white-

Lightworks has a bit of a learning curve. Also, are you just using the free version, or have you paid for the pro upgrade? The free version is certainly impressive for what it is, but it is very limited on which codecs it uses.

it's the free version. I'm still looking for a free cutting software, just like movie maker, but one thats better to handle.

The only "free" you'll get that's worth anything is Lightworks. Otherwise, you'll need to budget around $100 US (give or take) for something like Vegas, Premiere Elements, or Pinnacle Studio. That's the bottom end of functional, consumer/prosumer-level NLE software.

If you can view the scene in B&W through the viewfinder, you'll get a pretty good idea of what effect the filters are having.
BUT: be aware that they won't have the "exact" same effect they would with film due to the spectral sensitivity of the chip/camera. However, you should be able to tweak the color channels in any decent NLE to get the look you want.
Hope this helps.
Ken
