I never really new how much raw footage needed color correction until this morning. the first clip is without, and the second clip is only the 3-way color corrector. WOW!
Properly color correcting footage will be the difference between something looking like a home-video, and a professional looking cinematic clip. (barring horrendous lighting and camera angles )
Have to agree with you but its all personal taste, I often look at color correction I have done and debate what is better before or after and also go through phases of different looks eg blues in the blacks to golden whites etc. I guess following trends in the world.
The second one looks better to me because it looks like you fixed the Gamma curve a bit. The first one is sort of washed out, the blacks are too high, and the overall look is too light. The second one has more of an S Gamma curve, crushed down blacks on the bottom end, with highlights standing out.
I do mostly still digital images at this point, using Photoshop, and I have to agree the first image looks better -- that is more like what we would see. Isn't that the standard, at some point? (That's a big topic, what we actually "see" vs. what we want to see). The second image.... the sky is too dark, the boats are too bright (as said before). I use polarizing filters when shooting blue sky and that gives the color you want, IMHO, deeper blue but not artificial.
Overall, I like the first one better...although the water color seems a bit strange. To get a better idea, I think PaPa's suggestion of posting some higher res versions would help considerably.
