Clips play choppy in L & T window

Students were shooting in 720/30P (God knows why), and when you go to play the clip in the L & T window, it starts fine then starts getting choppy to the point you could not pick clips if you wanted to. I discovered the problem pretty much goes away with 720/30PN footage. ALthough, if you let the clip play for about 30 seconds, it gets choppy too. Any ideas?

your drives are too slow. where is the source footage?
This is ingesting directly from the HVX 200A by firewire 800 to Mac Tower through FCP 7. I tried the archive function through FCP 7 to an OWC Mercury Elite Pro external hard drive. These are the drives that we edit to and from everyday. (Speed is certainly adequate for editing purposes.) The same choppy playback occurred when coming back from the hard drive through the L&T window. Also, this appears to happen more frequently on very long clips (as in one hour or so).

What is the speed of the drives?

7200rpm?

FW800, SATA, or FW400?

And are you ingesting directly from the HVX200 via what connect mode? USB or FW?

Help us out.

Drives are 7200 RPM 120 Gig Seagate Ultra ATA in an OWC shell. Drives have FW 800 and 400 and USB 2.0 ports available. The ingesting I was doing was directly from HVX200A by FW to 800 port on Mac 2.66 Quad Core Intel Tower through FCP 7.0.1 Log and Transfer. Plays choppy in L&T browser. Long clips start to ingest, and then just stall without any kind of warning signal. Shorter clips will play choppy, but they ingest fine and work fine in FCP timeline. And then I tried the archiving function on FCP to the external drive and then back into FCP L&T with the same results. Hope that helps you guys with all the details you need.

Any unusual system adds on installed, like Perian or something similar?

Do you write protect the cards before mounting and/or transferring?

No.. no Perian or anything like that. And NO we have not been protecting cards as a matter of course as you guys are suggesting. We are fairly new into P2 use and it would have never occurred to use that something as simple as that really does make a difference. We'd appreciate any other thoughts you may have.

i have had a number of firewire transfer problems in the past with the hvx myself and finally just started using usb to transfer. let me propose a worklow for you to try:

- connect your hvx to your computer via usb and transfer the P2 volume to your fw800 owc drive.
- disconnect the camera
- log and transfer from the owc drive
