C300: Cleaning Front protective glass of the sensor?

Hello

as i understand there is like a protective glass in front of the sensor.... it looks like there are : front protective glass, NDs, and only then sensor...

so anyway i just created my self a problem:

Once during one of the lens change i noticed that something like a hair was sitting on that front protective glass , so i used Giottos Rocket Air Blower - (Large) 7.5" to blow it out, it worked out good the hair was blown out, and since then from time to time i used that Air Blower during lens changes just in case.

Anyway, yesterday, with out any reason I decided to look inside and used my phone to light it up , the phone has some kind of blue light .... and Oh My God ..... i can see all that dust on that front protective glass..... so just like usually i took my air blower and tried to blow it out - and u know what? - Nothing !!! it does not do anything at all.......all the dust remained on its place like if i was not blowing anything at all! One stupid idea came in side my mind and i took lens pen, god that was a mistake!!! First i tried brush, very stupid idea, the amount of dust multiplied, but also its kind off... not sure how to say it in english, but now it was like a dust with stains! now probobly even worse idea came up to use the other end of the lens pen ... so called cleaning tip..... well it looks like i wiped most of the dust, but now that front protective glass does not look that CLEAR , it looks like that cleaning tip left some marks (not scratches no, not that bad) but like wiped stain..... like an oily print, something similar if lets say u touch your glasses with a finger....

so i have a few question if u dont mind:

- how bad is what i done ?
- how to correct it?
- how to clean it next time i see some dust on that front protective glass element?

and anything else you would like to add!

Regards

I have cleaned my DSLR sensors several times, however, chances of smearing the sensor is high. Once I had messed up a 40D in 2008. When your brush touches the sides of the sensor, it picks up grease kind of substance. So I will certainly not try that with the C300.

I had got dust spots in the C300 last year and got it cleaned by Canon. The dust spots were visible in the LCD monitor at narrow apertures. You can check if the dust spots are visible in your screen. Else, no point in messing up till the time the dust shows up. You can also try to use a wider aperture if possible.

I think better to check with Canon for cleaning the C300.

what would be the easy way to see if the dust spots are visible? against what background its easier too notice it? as i understand i need to close iris at like f11 and film something black? or else?

regards

Did you have the camera turned off when checking the sensor for dust or changing lenses? I once read the sensor has a electrical charge on it when the camera is turned on and will attract dust like a magnet if the lens is removed.

You can see dust spots without pressing the record button. Just attach your LCD. Point it towards a wall and use a narrow aperture. At f16/f22 you may see the dust spots shown in your LCD. When you use wider apertures, they wont be visible. If the dust spots are not visible in the LCD during your normal shooting aperture range, then you shouldn't be bothered. Else, get it cleaned.

Canon has advised not to use very narrow apertures for shooting.

i wonder if any one sent c300 for that Payed Upgrade - canon offered better sensor protection for like 350 euro i believe (dont remember the price exactly). i wonder if during that so called upgrade will they clean the sensor and front protective glass as well, or u have to pay separately for it?

Just wondering if you managed to find a solution to your issue of having a smear on your C300? I too now have the same issue!

I had a dirty sensor and sent mine in for cleaning and also had Canon perform the dust upgrade- I think it's worth it for peace of mind.

plz tell us did u pay twice ? or u just payed for the upgrade and they cleaned it for free?

how do u guys clean that protective glass in front of the sensor, how to do it right?

The upgrade of the dust filtering hardware is free, it is not a payed upgrade. Having your internal sensor cavity cleaned incurs labor cost. I'm sure cleaning the front glass element on the sensor block will cost for labor as well, but not nearly as much as the internal glass.

After 19 months with my C 300 I picked up a piece of dust on the sensor glass. It appeared in the middle of a shoot and I was able to move it off the sensor with a puff of air from a dry syringe. I eventually extracted the bit of dust with an Arctic Butterfly. It was actually very easy to do.
