Clean HDMI CONFIRMED on the T4i.

I was convinced that the only major advantage the T4i had over the T2i/T3i/60D was the continuous AF, and if that isn't a factor for you, the others have several major advantages, like 3x zoom, ergonomics, and ML. If this is true, it could be a new outlook on the T4i.

Just saw Gary's post after I posted. Lol....

All that's confirmed is that the overlays on the image are not a part of HDMI out. If the footage is interlaced utilizing a non-standard pulldown, broken colorspace (i.e. like the GH2 HDMI out), or some wonky frame-size/aspect ratio, then I'd say it's still pretty useless.

I wonder: are the overlays off all the time or is it selectable? Just thinking it could mess you up if you use an HDMI EVF or monitor.

Wouldn't this mean you'll just get moiree and aliasing at very high bitrates?

Probably not higher bitrates, but it'll just mean that you have better grading and color space options on Moire / Aliasing / really soft footage. Can Canon do anything right?

There's a lot of things I'd love to have in a new Canon too, but .... "Can Canon do anything right?" Are you kidding? With $500 and a used T2i you can do things that are simply amazing and unimaginable 10 years ago. At that time camera's and editing systems for film or the earliest digital cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to do what we now do for a few thousand, all in.

I stayed away from the first generation of HD for cost reasons and since Canon DSLR video came out, the playing field has now been brought down to everyone's level in the last 4 years. Is there a cam that hits all my requirements yet? No and I don't think at these price points there ever will be.

No one else is making everything I want either, so I'll count my blessings when I see them :)

Cheers,
Pete

Dang Gary, come pick me up tomorrow, we'll go test it with a KiProMini or something. Pflugerville, TX Best Buy has a demo on the camera stand thingy with the wires attached so you don't steal 'em...

Why are we just now hearing this and where is the youtube evidence? People already have these cameras. The clip the poster above me linked to clearly had overlays.

Definitely useless. It's really sad that none of these bigger Japanese companies can give us a camera that can do everything we want them to do, within reason. Simple things like clean HDMI output, mic jacks, better recording codecs and full manual control of everything seems relatively possible. Yet they either don't read anything online that people ask for or intentionally leave it out so that they can artificially create product tiers.

I think things will start to change as people are not buying the new Canon as much for video.

Canon is probably the most frustrating company I've ever dealt with in that they are tiering everything to death. Want autofocus, then get the t4i; want 3x zoom, then go back to t3i; no moire = 5d3, but image is still soft; want true HD? then pay $12k more for C300, but if you want to use EF and PL mount lenses, then you have to buy 2 versions of the C300. Want 4K, then 1D-C at $15K, but still no RAW. Want RAW? Then $30K for the C500.

Buying Canon is becoming such a joke since you have to basically buy 5 different very expensive and overpriced Canon models to have less features than one Sony FS700.

I'm just hoping for a Canon DSLR with true 1000 line HD and no moire. I will buy one the moment it comes out. I think Nikon needs to release a really good video DSLR. They seem to be the only company that Canon responds to.

I think many people will still use canon for years to come. They just have that brand. I have friends that are noobs when it comes to things like this and they just buy canon just because it is canon. Just like how people buy Apple just because it's apple. yeah I'm trying to start a flame war.:Drogar-Smoke(DBG):

They do have the brand, but the former religious Canon users like myself and many others have lost the zeal and fire that Canon inspired before. I remember when the 5D2 and 7D came out, the whole DIY film world was so excited and Canon was revered as God's own camera company. They sold countless cameras to video people who worshipped their DSLRs

That certainly is not the case anymore. Many people like myself, after all the disappointing and over priced releases lately have simply moved on to other camera companies that are offering more for the money.

You can only ride on a name for so long. They have to eventually start coming out with cameras worth buying

I think this type of mentality is usually found in the still photo world, where Canon is still good. I think we'll see a lot of filmmakers moving over to the BMC camera quite easily.
