Cinemorph Anamorphic-ish Filter

Yes the version that we'll be releasing first will be $199. There's so much invloved with getting these made and assembled one by one right now and still making them look pro and practical. We've been tinkering with a few designs and solutions for over a year now, but we really wanted them to look good so we waited until we found the right parts.

If the interest is there then we can get them mass produced and drop the price in the coming months.

I wish you success on this. It seems like you've come up with a small form factor solution to what a lot of shooters want, and at good value to boot!

Honestly when I first started looking at anamorphics I was shocked something like this didn't already exist. Now I see you're trying it - sweet! I WILL buy one!

No sequeezing or desqueezing with this sytem. It keeps your vidoe at 16:9. You'll hard-matte or crop in post. Which I found very nice for repositioning and recomposing the shot later...sort of like working with 3K or 4K footage.

This is interesting. How does it not squeeze the footage? I thought the purpose of an anamorphic lens or filter was to squeeze the footage so you could decompress it in post with, say, a 2.39 aspect ratio.

this thing looks awesome!

vidatlantic, did you say you are going to come out with a 82mm? if you are I would snag one the instant it is available. or sooner!

It doesnt squeeze the footage because its not an actual anamorphic lens...it simply mimics some of the other characteristics of anamorphics...mainly streaks & flares as well as stretched bokeh or smeared blurring.

The rest is up to you to decide how wide you'd like it by cropping or adding black bars in post.

Its very convenient because its small and you dont have to focus 2 lenses like when using real anamorphic lenses. You only focus your main photo lens.

And as for 82mm...I think 77mm will be our largest, but some smaller lenses wont work with that size and vice-versa; larger lenses wont work with smaller filters. We'll have a list of compatible lenses and filters coming soon. Thanks!

BTW, more footage with rack focusing http://vimeo.com/19916732

vidatlantic, are you in Palm Beach? Asking because of the Loxahatchee footage. I went to school for Computer Animation and then Motion Picture Production out there.

Well, we're headquarted in the DC/Maryland area, but we've been working on a big production down here in Palm Beach and Miami. We also have projects and production partners in LA and NY as well.

What school is in this area that offers that kind of course? We've been here in PBC for a short time, but always looking for help on our productions.

Digital Media Arts College in Boca Raton has an accredited Computer Animation BFA program with a full mocap studio, render farm, and Maya on all their computers.

I then transferred over to Palm Beach State College in Lake Worth for their Motion Picture Production Associates program. They have a Red One and a bunch of other cams.

Digital Domain just opened a studio in neighboring Stuart County and they're working with FAU to open an animation/VFX school in the heart of West Palm Beach in the coming years.

vidatlantic,
can you please upload a raw file from one of your shoots ? maybe one shot you decide that gives the most of the filter capabilities...
(i also PM'ed you with some important questions :) )

thanks

Wow, theres a lot happening here the area. I didnt realize it. I thought we were the only ones shooting with Reds around here. Its a great place to film though. The lighting is always nice here and there are so many degrees of scenery and locations. Not to mention the characters in Palm Beach county. Its pretty inspiring and America at its finest!

I just PMd you back. But I forgot to ask you...what do you mean by raw file? still photos or video files? The last vimeo upload "Loxahatchee Sunset" was pretty much raw. We didnt color grade or sharpen or anything but crop the video in post. Thanks!

Yeah, just don't go to Belle Glade! Very dangerous.

Want it, need it, got to have it. Hurry up with that list so I know which lenses to buy for my new camera package:)

Uh Oh, what's the deal with Belle Glade? One day we drove around the entire lake scouting filming locations and I guess we drove by Belle Glade but didnt stop. We have a local who's going to take us back there next time.

Roei, I just made the CineMorph vimeo videos downloadable for anyone who wants have a closer look. The Loxahatchee Sunset video is untouched by color grading and whatnot.

Ha...I thought about making something like this a couple of years ago after looking at this site:

http://www.diyphotography.net/diy_create_your_own_bokeh

Shouldn't be too difficult.

Yeah, thats sort of the basic method...add to it a streak and flare method as well, nice optical glass and a smooth rotating filter so that it looks a bit more professional. Also when looking at it, it pretty much is disguised as a regular glass filter so its not distracting to anyone in front of the camera. It wont become a conversation piece unless you point it out. It'll look cool, but not "Zacuto Cool"! ;) And we mean that with love for Zacuto!

UPDATE: We've also experimented with this for well over a year now and have figured out the best way to lose the least amount of light possible. The link with the cut-out looks like its acting almost as a closed down iris.

Besides being very third world country like and at one time having the highest rate of AIDS per capita in the United States, you may not want to take a fancy looking car or show off your gear in the streets. People have been known to have been followed and then disappear. I wish I could say I was joking or exaggerating.
