GH2 Cinema Anamoprphic footage and More | Evolving

Hmmm, I'll tell you this: as long as you are not buying Canon lenses you're pretty much okay. You can fit any lens to Canon, but it's not the flipside. You'll have to buy lenses either way, so that's sort of a non-issue. What will change is what glass you buy first, but eventually you'll use it on another cam.

SDHC cards are cheap, you could survive on a sixty dollar investment (as of today) for two 16gb Cards that would give you about half an hour of footage with the best hack at the moment. Alternating between the two is pretty easy.

GH2 batteries probably last longer than any others. Two batteries is all you need if you have power around. That's cheap... way cheap.

I would probably put up money in a wager that GH2+Hack fairs the best in a blind test of all the sub 10~16K cameras that are out right now, when dealing with large sensor formats. But, there's also the underlying notion that you don't have the best digital image out there. If you're one of those people, it really won't matter what you buy unless you've got an Alexa.

DSLR users are envious of F3's or FS100's (I wouldn't be, hehe), F3's are envious of Epics, Epics envious of Alexas, Alexas envious of Film.

If that's your path... well, I hope you find something that puts you at ease soon! I remember those days... I still go through it now and the formats are open to me at any time. =T

Using 5DtoRGB also helps out a ton, along with great glass. I know a lot of people say the glass doesn't make a difference, I flat-out disagree.

Seriously, the main point of these cams IS the changeable lens setup, and you should get great glass to go along with that.

Yeah but that's irrelevant, then you remember that even the best films are grainy as hell and only have 6 or 7 stops of dynamic range once it's all graded ;) Good ole reversal film and grungy textures. See, have a look: http://www.blubeaver.ca/

Would love to see more shots with lots of shadows and midtones areas to see the grain please ^_^

Kholi, thank you for all your tests. This is the kind of stuff that keeps me coming back to DVXuser. Good job!

Kholi, if you have the time, i would love to see you test and compare your current hack to something like the 42mb hack. I'm wondering how much difference there really is in grain and overall image quality and cadence .

Don't think. Do =D

5DtoRGB is the way to roll!

Save your avchd and go to Dpx for grade.

I am going to get the batch when it's stable

cutting in fcpX
plan is to import as proxy, edit then export with source avchd (seaquake)
but i rather grade outside of X and this is the tricky part.

you say convert using 5dtorgb as dpx edit to throw it in resolve then back to X for adding back transitions etc...

Pretty much.

I agree. I think the GH2 can be massaged in camera to a healthy 9 to 10 if you shoot properly. No big deal. We've worked with less before.

I'll definitely be shooting some more footage soon. I still need a very in-depth, non technical, test of interior lit footage but so far so good!

Of course, and no prob.

I need to get the cam again, but I'll do so. My only thought is that I personally can't justify going with a lower bitrate hack when you can use the higher bitrate and eck as much as you can out of the cam for a few more dollars.

You wouldn't go to DPX until the very very end, so you cut, online an XML to DPX, color, then master.

Got an interesting post up on the new blog about digital looks, talking mostly about the GH2 -- www.campcomet.com --, sort of soft launching the site for now but don't forget to click the facebook connect link. I'll open up a subscription button soon, after the official launch.

Tons more to come.

There's some lowlight interior stuff in this video. Yes, we are goofing around like mad. Download the file at will, it's heavily compressed from a 2GB file, but looks better than the vimeo viewing and is 1080.

From the vimeo:
***READ: The color shift is done in post, as a measure to show the difference from a grade to the recorded image. The recorded image itself is the warmer material you see, or in the garage, the slightly green tinted material.

This is all natural light, indoor and out. No bounce, no bulbs, no nothing.*

Another round of tests, this time though I took the S16s and GH2 down into the basement of a parking structure to see how the noise handled.

GH2 + Quantum V2 Hack
ETC MODE ON
Sandisk 30mb/s 16gb Cards
Film Mode: Smooth -2 -2 -1 -2
Glass: Zeiss S16 Zoom (10-100/2), S16 8/1.3
No ND on anything this go around
ISO at 400 both setups (Yup! underground as well)

Since Denoiser wants to crash a lot in FCP, I actually didn't denoise a lot of this version. I do have a "final version" I turned into Poptent that I'll post, which has a more final look.

Although it was for a poptent deal, it was a last minute excuse to test the camera on something more than standing around for us.

I'm learning my way around the lenses, particularly that you can't ND and let them flare or you'll get a lot of noise and kill the image.

For S16 Zeiss Superspeeds, I think I'll roll with a 9, 6, and 3 once more, versus the 1.5 and .6 that I had this time.

For larger, though, I'll stick with huge amounts of NDs and high ISOs for daylight work.

On the Color:

Colorista II
You should be able to tell the original from the grade, but in case: It's the stuff that's all warm and fuzzy. Was just toying with what I could do and what I couldn't, it actually goes pretty far I must say, for what it is, before it starts to break up.

On this front, I would have no issues what-so-ever going to apply a grade to GH2 footage, I expect an easier time without using ETC mode, as well.
Feel free to ask any questions, and of course, facebook us and visit the site.

I´m getting mine in four days. I haven´t been so excited since ... ähhh, a long long time!

Are you getting along well with your cards? Speedwise? You´ve got the Sandisk 30Mb/s class10s?

Yes sir. Two 16gb 30mb/s from best Buy. They went up two dollars, I went back to buy two more so that I didn't have to offload while outside and never even opened the two new ones.

They work great, about 14 minutes a piece on each card, offload pretty fast (straight into a laptop, onto a drive).

I do want to try the 64GB Cocaine cards that other people have, though!

Very good! Right now I´ve got two 8Gb @30Mb/s (ones missing though). But they´re really cheap these days and the 16GBs offer more Bytes per cent also.

Going back to having to change media so often seems a bit backwards, doesn´t it? but I will happily do so! :)

Thing is, it's not the same as buying p2 Cards back when that's what we were shooting to. Even if you only got one 16gb card to accompany your two 8's, you'd be good. You can rotate 3 cards of that size just fine.

I´m just looking at prices. The 45Mb/s are even a bit cheaper than the 30MB/s, maybe they´ll span! I have to log off, or I´ll burn my cards buying the whole internet...

Here's an interesting still from some video I just nabbed last night:

(click to see the 1920x1080 version)

Settings:

  • GH2 Quantum V2 hack
  • 30mb/s Sandisk
  • Film Mode: Smooth -2 -2 -1 - 2
  • ETC mode off
  • Zeiss 8mm/T1.3 Superspeed @ T4
  • ISO: 400

What you're seeing is the porthole of the lens, since ETC mode is off. It's an interesting look for say a music video, or a peephole shot in a movie. I liked the still a lot.

I did quick adjustments, but here's the link to the original still (jpeg compression as well): Porthole

More to come!

when things are out of focus the noise gets bad bad bad.
A royal bummer is to get a really good lens, like the Olly 45mm, strap it on, and you get this great DOF with nice bokeh, and the cam just trashes it with splotches. But maybe it can be fixed. And the C300 does look tasty.
That beach vid looks really great. I had tried a 12mm TV lens with ETC, but I gave up on it because of the noise. I'll have to give it another try.

Try the new Quantum V2 hack if you can. I don't mind the noise at all, now. Especially without ETC on.

thats +1 on saturation? not a typo?

I'm running skintone tests at the moment -2 thru +2 but not had time to see my results
