GH2 Cinema Anamoprphic footage and More | Evolving

Had no idea you can't use an external monitor with ETC mode on.

Definitely needs to be updated.

ISO 640 in ETC isn't going to be pretty. The ETC mode really amplifies the noisiness of the camera in general, even outdoor exteriors at like ISO 320 can be a bit much at times (although that's probably caused by the aforementioned ISO glitch).

Don't get me wrong, ETC is an awesome feature and I use it a lot, but I wouldn't design a whole workflow around it unless you've really tested it and like the look.

That's the conclusion I came too, that the ETC mode is adding a nice amount of noise, which sucks because the S16 lenses are pretty amazing on this camera.

8mm, 9.5mm, 10mm focal lengths with only a hair of distortion... quite awesome. That's saying that, even though it's pretty noisey, I really do like the look in conjunction with the S16 lenses. Especially this 10-100/T2

If you still needed some ungraded indoor footage with little light I can do it. Just tell me up to what iso ranges you wanted to see, as the new patch goes up to 12,800 as you probably know (not that it's practical, ha). I'm the one with that fire spinning video on vimeo. http://vimeo.com/32177879

Of course, it would be leaves or trees, right?

Gonna break out the lite panels and do some interior stuff tonight. Still getting acquainted.

The streaking stuff is weird, but it seems like it's just from under-exposing the camera by a stop. You can see it at 0:12 then it vanishes when I open up seconds later.

You can download the X264 encoded file. Heavily compressed but surprisingly stout! From 500MB down to under 30 and I think that it still looks good.

Cool! Here one from the NEX5N. (This is not mine, FYI)....I love the look of the noise. Yummy grain look. If you're not into it, it might make the decision for you.

NEX5N

Compare?

Hacked GH2

These are mine...
IS03200 no noise reduction...nothing special. Just low light on NEX5N, as a reference for the GH2 stuff. Enjoy.

Raw footy, no color correction, no noise reduction

Light color correction, no noise reduction

The NEX looks pretty sweet for the price, thanks for posting the footages, HHL.

I think I do prefer the look of the GH2 + Hack still, but it's looking like a good alternative for sure.

boy, this looks amazing. very natural colors. my kind of look :)
this is great encoding btw. scaling "on" full screen still looks very sharp.
i'll be asking for your encoding settings soon!

Download the file on Vimeo. Let me know what you think. =]

I remember being in love with the GH-1, but so many shortcomings forced me to sell it.

It'd be wedding bells already if the ETC mode didn't behave so weird under lowlit situations... but the daylit stuff is outright face-melting with the S16 glass.

Thanks Kholi. Please keep posting your footy! It's great to see what this thing looks like in the hands of a master. See you around!

I was having MAJOR issues with noise in lower mids with the hack in and out of ETC mode. The pattern was flickery and completely unsatisfactory. Even in broad daylight, pointing the camera at something of a dark color (a 4x4 Floppy for example) saw WAY too much noise just in that patch.

Today, I've got a new set of PL lenses and I'm testing them with the straight-up Driftwood seaQuake patch from earlier in november and right now, it seems to have fixed my issues. I need to go into a room with litepanels to see if I'm still getting the same thing.

But, even in ETC mode, large splotches or shapes of lower mid blacks or shadows aren't getting the same noise in broad daylight in or out of ETC. Will report back soon.

blackcoat.jpg

Yesterday, with the other hack, this coat would've been crawling with unecceptable levels of flickering noise.

This is a 720P JPG still... the black is almost too clean to be real for this camera. And it isn't crushed or manipulated in any way other than exporting it to post here.

I like my GH2 but above 400 ISO the shadow noise--especially on flat surfaces--is too much for me. I even prefer the Vixia G10 pro cmos in this regard, even though the detail is of course not as sharp. Using the Olly 45mm, I get this amazing bokeh, it is truly awesome. Take that into a dimly lit area with shadows, and yikes. Bokeh plus GH2 plus high ISO equals major bummer.I haven't used the 5D in a while, but my recollection is that it was ever so slightly better, and I hate to say it but the Sony 5N looks pretty nice. I've been holding off on the Sony because Sony has led me astray so many times with their cams, but it looks like they are on a roll.

I forgot to mention that still was at 400 ISO.

I did some 800 and 1000 ISO. I think I could tolerate 1000 with a light denoise, but that's a stretch.

800 seems to be the threshold for me, with comfort-levels residing at 400.

I agree with you, when things are out of focus the noise gets bad bad bad. This is why I'm salivating over the C300... it just looks right. But, still testing GH2 to see how far I can go with it.

And, I think you're right: 5D seemed to be a little more tolerable in these situations. I guess no one cam has it all.

Some more test footage. Wipes from ungraded to graded included.

Will make the file downloadable tomorrow, need to change some stuff and will replace the video.

Rig supplied by Hot Rod, by the way. I mentioned it a while back but you can't beat this thing for GH2 + PL.

are you saying SeaQuake is better than GH2-X in regards to noise in the shadows?
