CineForm

David - when doing a mxf SD - DV / AVI conversion, do you end up with a stand alone DV compatible file within premiere, or do you need the cineform codec and presets on the destination machine to play the clip back. I.E is your DV codec proprietary? It seems this way on the demo.

When I launch a converted clip in premiere and use a standard DV preset, I get a "need rendering" red bar across the top of the timeline.

We don't use DV, particular as that halves the color information from 4:2:2 to 4:1:1. You need to open an Aspect HD present for real-time 4:2:2.

okay, but I do shoot a lot of DV on the HVX. So what happens when I convert DV (sourced on the P2) using HDLINK? What is it outputing?

Will the quicktime version work with powermac g5s or just intel based macs. Any timeframe for release? Your product is revolutionary. How does your codec compare to avids hd codec?

AVID's HD is DCT and CineForm HD codec is Wavelet, wavelet has better quality per bit as a compressor. AVID's is fixed to HD res, we have 2K and above capabilities. Anyway I should stop betting-up on AVID as we don't compete for the same market, their codec if good for its intended applications.

As for CineForm on the Mac, the optimized performance version will be Intel Mac only (5 years of codec optimization for Intel can't be switched to a different architecture overnight) and will have add G5 support but will not be anywhere near as fast.

We are planning Mac based CineForm codec support to be available around September.

thanks for the quick response. I guess I'll be selling that old g5 of mine:crybaby:. Ive got till september so thanks for the warning.

I have an laptop with ati firegl v5200 graphic card in and i been trying to get overlay to an external monitor from premiere 2.0. I have checked the plaback option in prem that i want to use an exteranal monitor. I also have a computer with a ati radeon 9800 graphic card in but it works neither. Any tips what im might doing wrong? or what i should be looking for in the graphic cards settings (i cant find any special overlay settings)

I have an ATI 9800 and it works fine. The easiest way to get output to external monitor is setup like want to have MediaPlayer play a DVD out to an external monitor. The ATI manual might say using about post-production, but if you think consumer for a moment, the controls for output are the same. Once you have DVD filling and external monitor, your card settings are now correct. Fire up Premiere Pro with Aspect HD and select "Scrub to external overay" from the playback settings window (playback will always go to the overlay -- just like a DVD through MediaPlayer.)

So, indeed no DV. But there is presets that read Aspect HD 720X480 60p, Aspect HD 720X576 50p What are those for ?

I was wondering... Why not 24,25p ? Why you do not suport the squeeze mode that dvx100 delivers (without the lens) and convert it to CineForm square pixel 4:2:2 avi ? THAT would be a great workflow.

I am starting once again to consider SD after some hard times I am getting regarding real time green screen work. I cannot seem to find any solution that will not cost me a fortune. Aspect HD is great for editing and basic trasitions but there is not a plug in with similar strenght for green screen, or I am not looking at the right palces...

Boris FX makes by far the best keyers I have tried but no real time preview, and the open GL philosophy is a bit stupid, someone explain to them that it needs great power from the CPU to load everything to the GL memory, and that takes time... so does rendering, after that its real time preview for both cases sure... go figure...

Just some thoughts, looking forward to hear from anyone that have the same problems, and of caurse I hope David is in the mood to analyze some more.

The "Aspect HD 720X480 60p", "Aspect HD 720X576 50p" presets are for the SD HDV modes on the JVC camera. 24,25,30 Hz SD modes are not excluded, you can create your own preset in seconds (select a preset you want to modify and click on the custom tab.)

We could do what you suggest for the DVX100 yet that is 4:1:1 camera, so there is less value in converting to 4:2:2 CineForm. It can be done with Aspect HD today, we just don't automate it.

I've got the trial of Aspect HD, and when I frame advance in the timeline, the monitor only updates every other frame. I tried fiddling with the Playback settings, but nothing's working. Is this normal or is there something I'm doing wrong?

I'm using Premiere Pro 1.5.1. Thanks!

C.S.,

The is no known issue with this. Are you running 30p on a 60p timeline as that would have that effect. Check that you timeline properties match the clips you are editing.

David......I have a 9800Pro also.....AGP of course. I'd like to add a PCI graphics card to my system that can drive an LCD or an HD tv with DVI input. Do you know if this is possible? I don't want to invest in a new PC at this time to get PCI-xpress so that I can use the Parhelia carrds. If I could get Premiere to scrub and preview to an external HD monitor or PC LCD via the cineform controls and this PCI graphics card that would be awsome.

Thanks!

Be warned PCI is not fast enough for HD, although 1280x720p24 might be OK ( that is 44MB/s whereas PCI saturates around 80MB/s). You can't use 1080 modes or 720p50/60 through old PCI. That all said, I've never tried it, so it may not work for 720p24 either.

I remember i had that option for my radeon 9800 to open fullscreen in another monitor but i can't find it now. I believe it's my driver version that is different since its no option. What driver version are you using?

Yes but if I used the PCI card to be my "desktop" display and used the DVI output of the 9800pro AGP to drive an LCD or HD monitor would that work? I am guessing that AGP is fast enough? Right?

Thanks!

icicle22,

Yes that should work fine.

Eljoninjo,

Maybe search for info on an ATI forum. Sorry I not much help with graphics card setup.

The settings are all correct. The clip I'm using is 720P60 in a 24P timeline (a CineForm preset). I converted the clip with HDlink, first setting it to leave the framerate as is, then later setting it to convert from 60 to 24. No change- it still updates every other frame when frame advancing with the arrow keys in the timeline.
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks again, David. Wonderful utility.

The project is 23.976 and the clip is 59.94.
When I play it, it seems fine- not choppy at all. But frame advancing always displays every other frame. I tried importing some of my DV clips into this same project, which play fine as well and also display every frame.

OK it seems like you captured 720p24 not 720pn24. You will get 60 frames in a 720p24 files will duplicate frame, like you are seeing. The next drop of Aspect HD (soon) will have a "remove duplicate frames" option so you can shoot in either mode. Prospect HD already has this upgrade and it work great.

To confirm load the 59.94 clip into a free tool like VirtualDub, it will be easy to determine if there are duplicate frames.
