Other: CineAlta Full Frame 36x24mm Camera event on September 6th

The first news about this camera was teased in early June, as Dennis posted. Early rumors had its arrival in 2018 but it looks like a working prototype is ready to mingle.

Looking forward to this one. If Sony have learnt as many lessons from the F5(5) as they seem to have, I think we might finally get a Sony camera that's nice and easy to use out of the box. Here's hoping they listened to my pleas for built-in wireless video/focus/audio integration/modules.

I'm also very interested to know if their 'greater dynamic range' claim, will finally see the Alexa bested for highlight latitude.

It'd also be nice to FINALLY have a camera I can put my CZ.2 zooms to proper use on!

Since a 36x24mm cinema camera with the Cinealta badge will most likely replace the F65, I would think this will be priced around Alexa and Varicam Pure territory. It would not make sense any other way. I'm sure Sony doesn't want its high end camera to be the cheap one.

I'm also looking forward to it and specially the footage they say they will show with the camera. Hopefully they will put it online too on the same day. I remember being disappointed with Dig, the F55 launch demo in how video like it looked. Hopefully this camera will look filmic out of the box like the Alexa and F35 do. But Sony's track record doesn't leave me very optimistic. My guess is it will be much like the F65 but with a full frame sensor. We will see.

I'd also say we can safely assume an Alexa-like pricing (hopefully inline with the Alexa Mini, since that's the hottest selling high-end camera out there), but probably more inline with the SXT.

I think (assuming they're sticking with SLOG3 and Sgamut3.cine, or at least have that as an option), there's probably a good chance of them having something that looks nice out of the box sample-wise.

Personally I'd probably prefer a return to the F35's colour science (as that camera just sings), but SLOG3 and Sgamut3.cine make pretty pictures easy with the current Sonys.

The F35 has massive pixels. Vista has space for massive pixels. Massive pixels are good.

The only way to ruin Vista is to go for a silly resolution.

I wonder the mount.. still FZ..? you think it has to be PL for the high end.. but maybe more like the fs7 PL (like) E mount with a bunch of adaptors .. end of the road for the FZ mount..? always a bit of a strange one..

Most of Sony's launch videos have been disappointing but that doesn't mean the camera won't deliver. I also remember DIG and a few other videos that surfaced, perhaps we all just look for different things.

I recall seeing one of the F65 launch videos projected in 4K and it was definitely cool and looked great, but definitely wasn't aiming for a film emulated look.

I think Sony is invested in slog3.sgamut all around and will leave it there in terms of color science and not fiddle with it beyond that. This camera will be more geared for post production workflows than the F5/F55 so that gives Sony even less reason to try and tame a look out of the box. They will bank on their newer XCON flavor codecs, somewhere where the F65 lacked.

The good thing about this camera coming so long after the F5/55/65 is there is a lot more familiarity and ease with the updated color science and how to work with it.

Agreed.. the last two back to back corps i have done were both Slog3.cine.. and they were not big budget, high end shoots by any stretch of the imagination..no way that would have happened probably even a year ago.. it was only high end docs that were just being to use it.. also 30p seems to have died a death.. anything I shoot from the US now is 23.98p..

I would doubt it would be E. No where near as strong as FZ. FZ was designed to be a "universal/base" lens mount from the outset. And where this camera is being aimed, they don't care about speed boosting a still lens, and it's "full frame", anyway(but I'm sure it will have crop modes). My guess is FZ or fixed PL.

Yes hopefully not one of those .. well everyone else is doing it.. things.. e.g. TL of everything ..slo mo of everything.. pointless side on B cam for interviews.. track on interviews (this at least seems to have died a death )... etc.. if they just throw on a LUT.. then I,d rather have full WB.. or burn it in while Im shooting.. but having said that.. if it means there will be eventually editors, who get the hang of being graders too.. (for the same price !).. same way we camera people have had to learn alot of new stuff (well us old ones)..and up our game..and do all the down loads for free !.. it can only be a good thing.. and the burnt out window info is actually there ,if they have the time and knowhow to do something with it..

Yes ordinary E mount forget it.. but the new PL style (it locks the wrong way, must be some patent thing) .. that would accept a whole load of adaptors ..with a strong front chassis .. like they have done for the Fs7II.. that would probably be as good as the FZ mount strength wise.. its just the FZ is bit of an anomaly .. or as you say just straight PL.. esp if thats the market ..yes it would have to have crop modes without a doubt.. crazy to cut out all s35mm lenses.. aspect ratio agnostic as some people call it..

It seems it will have all sorts of crop modes, including S35 4k (which makes it sound a lot like the a9 sensor on a pro video body, actually).

The F35 has massive pixels.
Actually, no. It gets its 1920x1080 image by downsampling from a 5760x2160 "RGB stripe" sensor (link). That's the same pixel area as a 34 Mpix FF sensor. The a9 photosites are massive in comparison (42% larger area).

Samuel unlike you im not really a details geek Im sure you are right.. I just know that Vista size sensors seem to sing because of the large image area. Ive seen it since the Kodak 14n.

^ Sure. All things equal (including DoF), a big sensor makes your images less noisy and more detailed.
