Cheap wide angle adapter for 20mm f1.7. Suggestions?

So this is interesting. With a 20mm f/1.7 lens and some wide angle and tele converters you could have a 14mm 1.7 and a 40mm f/1.7. What are the main disadvantages to using converters vs. actual lenses? Distortion?

There is some light loss, distortion and chromatic aberration with most of these adapters, but it varies with the brand. Actual wide angles are way better of course. But these may be acceptable for some applications. Maybe video for Youtube or even for your HDTV. With the higher ISOs of DSLRs , light loss is probably not a problem.

I'm thinking of trying these too. They look identical to Digitals Optics 62mm versions. Might be a bit better as far as CA on the edges?

hey i used a x08 wide angle adapter on the 14mm pancake... (LA7200 anamorphic first then Olympus wide angle adapter below)

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?240733-LA7200-Anamorphic-14mm-f2.5-Pancake-GF13

as the lens focus on the 20mm pancake actually protrudes out with the filter thread on it i was worried about attacking to much weight, the 14mm focuses internally so the filter thread is just a fixed part of the lens, screwed the Olympus adapter on it and it felt nice and sturdy with no danger of breaking the focus, also the 14mm was wide to start with... now even wider.

Here are some preliminary tests on the 14-140mm; it works as expected. Probably closer to .7x with the macro. You get the same barrel distortion you would expect from other wide angle converters when up close.

Zoom too far and you get this bokeh effect: http://i.imgur.com/saLoO.jpg

Yes, the macro lens is detachable if that's what you mean. Both the macro and wide angle lens can thread onto the 14-140mm individually. But without the macro, this wide angle converter is pretty much impossible to focus. I have yet to figure out how to get this thing in focus without the macro. Maybe somebody knows something I don't.

can you not manually focus or use AFC?

Thanks for the samples MrHeavySilence, I've been looking at picking up some cheap adaptors in place of spending upwards of a $1k for the 7-14 Panny lens just to see if I can make good use of the stretched perspective.

Good to know that if I zoom too far, the entire cast of the JLA will appear in the background of my photos :D

Are there any wide angle adapters that can work without the macro? I'm curious
Mine does not work without the macro lens screwed. There are two modes: 1) Wide angle adapter with the macro lens screwed, and 2) the Macro lens alone on the lens for macro capability... Al

weird... the M.O. wide andgle adapter can be used without the macro adapter... I wonder why this one has issues? anyone know.

Are you saying the M.O. has three modes: 1) Macro only, 2) Macro with converter screwed in, and 3) Converter without the macro? If so, what do you get with each configuration? My Opteka does not screw onto the lens without the macro on... Al

if you check a few posts after my original post:

There was a cheap wide angle adapter that was very popular with HV20 users, sharp enough, you could leave in on all the time. The Merkury or Digital Optics .45x, 52mm thread. They were on sale at a Pro Broadcast Video Surplus store on ebay for $8.50! I forgot all about it, then tried it on the Lumix 14-45. It wasn't bad at all. No vignetting at 14mm. Some softness in certain corners, but usable enough to hold off on buying the 7-14mm for a little while. I bought a more expensive Tokina last month, but it has heavy vignetting and was too fuzzy.

BELOW: It has barrel distortion close up but I kinda like it..

If you click the hv20 link he provided, The adapter has 3 modes and has examples of each.
