that looks like a great lens. however, it is a bit too long for general use.

you might want to consider the sigma 30mm 1.4 in addition to that lens.

btw.. how did you do the effects in that youtube video?

85mm is great for portraits, but it's really long for general use on a 7D.

If you are going to get an 85mm, you should get the Canon 85mm f1.8. It's reviewed very well and it only costs $379 vs $900 for your Sigma. Generally speaking, Canon makes betters lenses than Sigma.

Also, I can tell from the picture of the Sigma that it has a very short focus thrown, which is terrible for manual focusing and rack focusing.

The canon has a medium-ish focus throw and is a good lens for much cheaper

Get the Canon.

Wow dud the VFX on your youtube video is badass!!! Dig the concept, too bad it's a "fake trailer." Good job man!
AE?

Footage looks great! Forget what camera you shot it on your material from everything shot to graphics work looks outstanding!

As a matter of fact PM me so we can talk business on what something like this would cost if I wanted these services.

I think it really depends on what kind of line of work you're in. For weddings, it's very useful in getting a tight shot of the first dance and candids throughout the day but for general walking around, I agree it's overkill. While I never played with the Canon 85 1.8, I can say that the Rokinon 85mm 1.4 is worth serious consideration as it's very sharp wide open and is $100 cheaper. Plus the focus ring is very smooth and has a nice long throw to it so it's perfect for videographers.

It's a real bargain!

Yeah my shooting gear has consisted of these 3 lenses mostly lately

Tamron 17-50mm 2.8
Vivitar 1 series 70-210 3.5 Macro (nikon mount adapted)
nikkor 50mm 1.4 for low light

I use the first 2 mostly. Id say for a longer lense its nice to have a zoom to do micro adjustments. Is a fast 85mm a good idea? Of course, in fact i want one badly, BUT it would likely just be used for when i needed a closer shot and the 50 wouldnt work.

Basically a specialty lens. Get your everyday workhorse stuff first, then add the specialty stuff.

so is there a lens pretty much like the canon 17-55mm 2.8 thats cheaper?
the canon 17-55mm 2.8 is like 900 dollars!

Yes there's a Tokina 18-50mm 2.8 and there are two sigma's the 18-50mm 2.8 and there's Sigma's new 17-50mm 2.8. Also the Tamron 17-50mm or the Tamron 17-50mm VC (Vibration Control)

I still think that the Canon is superior.
