Chance to buy a cheap lens: Canon FL 85mm F1.8, does it fit on 60D?

I have a chance to buy an old Canon FL 85mm F1.8 lens, for about 100 euro (more than 3x cheaper than the new EF lens)...

Question is: Does it fit on a 60D? (7D / T2i)

And, will it give a nice video quality?

Short answer: No, it does not fit.

Long answer: No, it does not fit.. you _might_ be able to use an adapter with a glass element that degrades the quality. The rear element on my EF 85/1.8 is quite large, so there's a chance the adapter won't fit.

Thanks for the response!

Too bad... In that case I'm not buying it.
You have maybe other 85mm recommendations with a good price / quality ratio?

The Rokinon 85mm 1.4 at around $250 is super tough to beat. Even vintage 85mm lenses will be more expensive. Best of luck!

That does seem like a nice option, as I read lots of positive comments about it... Thanks.

However, I can´t find it anywhere in here (The Netherlands)... Is it possible it is the same lens as the Samyang 85mm, just under a different name? Cause that one I can find...

Yup, it's the exact same lens. It also goes under the Bower, Vivitar, and Falcon names. I heard they were working on a 35mm 1.4. It's a pretty great lens for the price and very sharp wide open. Very recommended.

Don't forget that the 85 is a full on zoom lens on the 60D - not the portrait lens that it is on a 35mm film camera or 5D (it's equal to about 138 mm).

Having said that, it's a nice way to get a very fast zoom if you need that. You can absolutely crush the focus on the back and foregrounds, and the bokeh is usually gorgeous on that genre of lens, regardless of make.

If you're getting an adaptable lens, stick to the Nikon, in my view, as the adapter selection is the best, and your lens will always keep its value.

Also don't forget about the Canon 85mm f1.8. It's $400, extremely sharp, and has an insta-grab manual focus override. It's also light, fast and small. If you ever do any still photography, you'll be glad to have the auto-focus. However, you won't impress anyone over at the photography annex :)

Used fast 85mm lenses are in the same price range with an adapter. The Canon 85mm 1.8 is worth a look.

That's not true. Vintage fast 85mm lenses are MORE expensive than their modern counterparts :). Try pricing an 85mm Takumar or Helios 40. Talk about sticker shock!

What do you guys recommend:

- A new Samyang 85mm F 1.4 (!) for arround 270 euro
- An used Canon 85mm F 1.8 for arround 280 euro

Canon, Nikon, Olympus Zuiko, ASAHI Pentax are all sharp and I have a lot of personal experience with all of them. The Canon has the advantage of fast quiet auto focus. Although you may not plan to use auto focus for HD video it is very useful spot focusing between takes, where with the manual only focus lenses you will have to use a loop or take time to zoom X5/X10 to be sure you are in focus.

The Samyang may be great, but watch out for the extreme shallow DOF wide open. Even more reason your manual focus check will cost you extra time under pressure.

Get the Canon... better optics, auto focus. On a telephoto lens like an 85mm, the shallow dof look is not a problem. However, focus at 1.4 would be very challenging, and the Vivitar lens is strictly manual focus, so you would get no assist from the AF.

Some of those prices are really good but I imagine a few of those auctions with a few days to go will bump up some of those prices. I know the Super Taks generally go for around $500 when bidding has ended and Nikons can go pretty high as well if they are 1.8 or below.

Still that's awesome news. I'm looking to get a fast vintage 85 and deciding between the Takumar 85 and the Helios 85mm.

I would still go for the new Canon 85mm 1.8 seeing that the prices are + / - range. Much better to have the auto focus as an option for both stills and quick focus between movie takes. Also new untouched glass. Some older lenses have been subjected to over cleaning which can show up when sunlight strikes the lens. Also the newer lenses tend to have better coatings and less ghosting.
I think the best vintage lenses are the ones you get a great deal on. I have a set of Takumar lenses from my Pentax 6x7. They are great sharp lenses and I bought all new. Talking about sweet spot, those lenses have a big one even on a 5dmk3. That is another vintage lens to look for. All very sharp, cheap but a little bulky. You won't find a better deal on a 150mm f2.8 or 165mm f2.8 in any other lens out there.

I hear you on the medium format lenses. One of my favorite lenses is the Volna-3 80mm 2.8. Just a gorgeous piece of glass.
