C200: CFast compatability - Cards that support VPG-130

You have no idea how cheap that is in comparison to a 512gb Redmag. It’s a fantastic deal. Don’t go the SSD route, just don’t. Lol

Why has nobody gone the SSD route? It's a realistic option now and when I head to Japan to shoot a full feature, I can't imagine swapping CFast Cards constantly. 512GB for $700 is insane!

Because I don't want an SSD, cable and power situation Velcroed to the side of my camera when I am hanging on for dear life on the front of a race boat getting ocean spray everywhere?

I hang out of cars going 100mph+ getting rollers, the SSD & Battery are least of your worries. I understand gimbals configurations but for anything Tripod or Shoulder Rig related. It's silly not to.

And to add, it's an unsupported configuration and could break or fail in the field.

So are several CFast cards, doesn't mean you cannot use them. it just means canon hasn't tested it.

For me, I would never risk it. The shoot I did last week had several instances where the camera became drenched with spray. Having the Cfast door open or modified at all would not be wise in that situation, that's my choice. We are shooting eight races for the season, each is unique and important to our story, I would never risk our A camera going down because of a hack to save some money. But that's all of our choice.

I'm working with Canon on some articles and it appears that Canon will not be certifying any new brands of CFast 2.0 cards in the near future, or at least Canon USA said they won't be when I asked.

In case anyone’s interested in the EgoDisk 512gb card, I picked one up and shot close to 2TB of footage with it this past weekend for a narrative project. It worked flawlessly. Was also using Angelbird’s new card reader which was fast and worked great.

I take it this was the "normal" Egodisk card, not the Elite? Egodisk told me not to use the Elite cards with the C200.

I bought 3 cards from Egodisk, two of those were upgraded to Elite Pro for free. One of the Elite Pro card keeps having one issue: sometimes the camera does not see it. I then have to format it into Ms-dos FAT and then it'll work fine for a while, until the camera somehow forgets and I have to repeat the process several time. That card is in quarantine for further inspection, but I might just ask Egodisk to exchange it back to the normal model.

The other two cards work flawlessly.

Were all those cards the 512 GB version or the 256 GB version?

They're all 256gb. The problem is the camera sometimes DOES see the card and will record to it. But it's just not reliable enough for client work.

I use a Sandisk CFast 2 reader and the problematic card connects and reads everytime. Makes me think this is only a Canon C200 - Egodisk problem.

Hi everyone! Joined the forum back in 2004 when I had a Pana DVX100, haven't been so active lately though but just ordered my C200 after doing some work with the C300MkII. Didn't have time to get Egodisk & Angelbird cards, so i bought a Delkin 256GB at a good price to start with (a friend uses Delkin/C200 without issues).
But thought I'd go with the Egodisk after this job!

So I should go with the non-Elite cards, the Pro-version?

Thanks for a great forum!

Delkin doesn't make a VPG-130 card so it will not work reliably.

Yes, get the Pro version of the Egodisk, people have had issues with the Elites.

Thanks! Yes i know it’s not VPG130 but it seems to work so far anyway. But i’m recording to my BM Video Assist as a backup as well ...

Please understand I mean no disrespect but I've had ZERO issues with the Delkin CFast cards since I got my C200 back in November and even on my 1DX Mark II for the past two years.

Again, not to be harsh to everyone but stop relying on what "Canon" recommends. These cards work perfectly fine and saves you money. I've yet to have any issues.

I agree that a recommended list isn't the end-all...companies may test certain media based on the time they have to do so and/or various relationships. I've seen this multiple times over the years with Blackmagic where certain cards/drives worked but weren't on their list.

And the same card can work for someone but not someone else. I have a Transcend 600 card that fails after about 2 minutes 30 seconds. Someone here said they had a Transcend 600 that worked fine. Maybe their card has different internal components than mine.
I'd shy away from cards that worked for one and not the next in favor of cards with a more consistent overall proven track record.

Agreed...a main difference for price between cards is rigorous testing (besides the company name). The Sandisks (or whatever) might go through more extensive writing/reading before they are sold while another company may put everything they have out there and the amount of lemons/failures thus increases...but both internally may have very similar hardware.

Also, if someone says they worked, it's important to clarify because 5-10 seconds of grabbing b-roll throughout the day here and there is not the same as shooting 20-30 minute interviews all day long.

I've never settled for cheap media or batteries, but always did on lenses. Even though I want high-quality glass that is the last thing people will see a difference with (especially online), and it's more important to keep the camera on and recording, lol.

It has been suggested that ALL of these cheap cards are actually crafted from storage that didn't pass muster with Sandisk. If it is a 512 GB card that has bad sectors, the sectors can be re-mapped and the card sold as a 256GB card with the new manufacturers case and controller. Don't know if this is true but a person high up in the industry told me this is how the Delkins and Egodisks of the world are selling their cards so much cheaper.

They call this anecdotal testing. It can be risky. What I do know is that for no name cards, the Egodisk specifically say that they meet the minimal read/write standard Canon has for the cards to record Cinema RAW Light, VPG-130. It's one thing to buy a card not certified by Canon. It's another to buy a card not only not certified by Canon but also not certified by the camera manufacturer or the card manufacturer to meet the camera's minimum data rate requirement. Not saying Delkin cards won't work, just saying I think that is one extra step of none compliance that I wouldn't risk. YMMV.

Anyone try out the EgoDisk PRO 512GB CFast cards yet? There was talk about them, and they seem to be available now. Confirmation that they are good?
