CES 2015 : Panasonic 4K UHD camcorders and 4K UHD blu-ray player

Definitely looks interesting, but that promo is awkward and ugly! I love seeing pro features trickle down to consumers because it means the price for that tech is moving down.

Ha! It was totally worth them manufacturing this camera...just to shoot that promo video! That is absolutely classic. That needs to go on the bloopers reel.

Is that for real?

Man you guys are tough! That promo will appeal to millions of people who intend to film just that sort of thing with their new camcorders. I don't see anyone here complaining being hired to shoot that for panasonic.

So I watched it again with my wife and it's not ugly but I agree with my wife's statement, "I mean I get what they're trying to do, but they could've done better."

The promo felt cheesy and unsophisticated to me and I think many consumers would agree. The acting was hammy and amateurish and the music felt very basic and stock. I don't fault the producers of the promo, but rather it's more likely the direction Panasonic marketing reps steered it. In the days of smart advertising campaigns from Apple, GoPro, and Coke I find this to be a poor representation of their product in the market.

To me these cameras will appeal to adults with children who are at least mildly tech savvy and as such I feel the promo was not in touch with the audience. This felt more geared towards grandparents and tech newbies, who may purchase this, but I doubt are the target for the worlds first prosumer camera with HDR functionality.

I cerainly meant no offense to it's creators, who's check from Panasonic I am sure is larger than anything I've worked on. Maybe it's just from being a Monday that it hit my funny bone lol.

Okay...so I decided to give it another go as well. I agree, maybe it was just the timing.

Since watching it for the second time...I've determined that I'm a bad person. I thought it was funny again. Sorry, Panasonic, its not you...it's me.

Current Blu-ray players can only play 1080p content, which is going to be a big issue as TVs increasingly move toward 4K. Fortunately, the Blu-ray standard is being updated to support 4K, and now Panasonic is announcing that it's the first company to develop a player that supports it. Panasonic showed a prototype of its UHD Blu-ray player at a press conference in Las Vegas this morning. So far, there's very little detail on it, including when you'll actually be able to use it. Previously, it's been suggested that 4K Blu-ray players may hit stores by the end of the 2015. It's clear that Panasonic's Blu-ray player needs more work, too: as far as we could tell, it doesn't even have a disc drive yet.

Six new camcorders from Panasonic overall -

HD line : V-160 for $229; V-270 for $299; W-570 for $449; V-770 for $599.

UHD line - X-870 for $899, X-970 for $999.

Nothing in the 4K "prosumer" series so far to undermine X-1000 ($3,500 MSRP) in the $1,500-$2,500 gap, though GH4+YAGH are precisely in that range now ($2,500 for the pair)

This is a focus on the artificial category of "consumer", while in reality there are only customers - even though different customers may have different needs. If you look at these cameras and specs, you can clearly identify a gap here that can be filled by a very capable camera for a more demanding customer scenario for about $1700. I am looking forward to Panasonic coming up with the followup, namely the AF200 for $1700. It won't happen at CES or NAB, but perhaps by the fall or by NAB 2016.

In order to sell more TV's they have to put UHD cameras in the hands of the consumers. It's pretty simple. HD is old. Nothing new. Just like SD before it. Right or wrong thats pretty much what is happening.

There are also millions of smartphones that have a 4K UHD mode and the low cost no contract 5.5" $299 OnePlus even shoots cinema 4K (4096x2160) .

That promo :love4: -

I had to watch it a second time as well.
I can honestly say that it wouldn't be so bad if they took out that bit at 0:27.
The first time i watched it i was to busy thinking it was stupid just from that.
When i was that kids age i would have thought by dad was teasing me if he did that (and he never would have because i was sick for a long time). It just wasn't cool !!
