Cavision vs. LCDVF Viewfinder

Hi All,

First post in a couple years, but I do read all the time. Let me just say this community has been my goto source for video info for over 4 years, and I thank you all.

I've had my 7D for about 6 weeks... now I need to get a viewfinder.

I've tried the z-finder, it's great and all, but the price is just too crazy IMO. I've also tried the Hoodman, but it didnt like how I would have to put velcro on the camera in order to mount it.

I've read all about the LCDVF. It looks great, and is the front runner for me. But then I stumled upon this AWESOME video, especially for those who shoot sports like me.

The gentleman used the Cavision viewfinder, which I somehow had not heard of. I even did some searching on this forum regarding it, and although I came across some mentions of it, I didn't really find much useful info.

I really like the way it mounts to the camera. It seems a lot safer than magnets which the LCDVF uses. ( I know, they say it's harmless) Both about the same price... and I guess there is a new Cavision version which mounts snugger than the 5D version.

Has anyone used the Cavision product? Can you vouch for it? By any chance can you compare it to the LCDVF? These are the two products I have not tried for myself and really need some help researching.

Thanks!

~ Jim

I have the Cavision with the swing away mount: http://www.frameyourart.net/7D2.jpg

I have not used any other viewfinder on the 7D, this viewfinder works well. It has a 6x magnification and it shows the entire LCD screen. After a little bit of shimming it fits securely against the camera.

For me it works well when hand holding the camera I can press firmly against the eyepiece for added stability. But for tripod and shoulder mount work, I really like that after checking focus this viewfinder can be easily swung out of the way.

Hope this helps.

6X magnification? That seems like you would see nothing but pixels. Just using my 4X loup on my 5DII LCD, it looks very bad with prominent pixels seen in the loupe.

Thanks for the opinions. I'm still not sure which one I'll go for. I feel like having it mounted to the bottom of my camera may be a pain when it comes to taking it in and out of my bag... on the other hand the magnets on the LCDVF make me uneasy.

Any LCDVF user have any thoughts on the mounting system they use?

Thanks again,

~ Jim

I've had the LCDVF for 2 days now and it works great. I like the way it attaches to the camera and hasn't been a problem with the magnets hurting the video BUT, and this is a Big BUT, I wish it had a diopter adjustment. I'm already looking for a new viewfinder because of this. If I could modify it out another half inch or so it would be fantastic but as it is I'm getting a headache trying to focus. If you don't need glasses it's a winner with a wide clear view of the entire LCD screen.

if you combine it with the handrip and plate it is very stable and you get shots as if you were using a full shoulder rig. An much cheaper than other options too. The only downfall is that you will get tired faster than using a full shoulder support.
