Carrying HMC150 in a backpack

Found one that I liked - Think Tank Streetwalker Pro. Thanks for all the advice :)

You can arrange the center dividers so that there is room for the camera, fits perfectly, down to the rubber eyecup. There's still space left over for small lights, mikes, and a couple of other things. I didn't want to carry too much stuff in it so I opted for a smaller bag. Tripod holder is a big bonus.

One of the TT Airports would work too, but it's too much bag for wandering around town.

I use a Petrol PCUB-1N. It holds all the camcorder stuff plus 2 lavs, shotgun, (2) 25' cables, 2 Comer lights and batteries, 3 collapsible reflectors/diffusors, 2 small light stands and monopod (outside in pockets), a portable HD and a Mac laptop. It's a little on the heavy side when fully loaded - especially when schlepping through airports. But spreading the load over both shoulders with one backpack beats lugging a couple bags or cases. It also fits in every overhead bin I've ever put it in - even on the smaller regional planes.

Hi Mark,
Could you please tell me the dimensions of your Mac laptop? I assume it goes in the back external pocket.
Thanks.

I just picked up Porta Brace bags from B&H for a song. At $99 each you can't go wrong. The model number is DV3U. They don't look all that big but they have tons of space in them and they come with a free balance card and small padded case for accessories. Right now in one bag I have a HMC-150 with shotgun mounted, Sennheiser g2 wireless system complete with handheld flagged mic, sony 7506 monitor headphones, led150 camera light (used the mini padded bag for this) bescor battery, twin show bracket, cables, manuals, pelican 0910 card case, spare batterys , chargers and I,ve got room to spare!

Great bag for the price!

if you plan on walking around a lot...carrying your gear, i can't recommend highly enough to get a backpack instead of one of the shoulder-strap bags like the Porta Brace DV3U.

any amount of lugging that shoulder bag around will quickly wear you out and easily create some nasty lopsided muscle tension as your body tries to compensate for the un-balanced weight.

by comparison, backpacks make the weight feel so much lighter.

Very true, that's why I went the Kata 207. I can run and gun with all my equipment if i need to. Sometimes you cant leave stuff laying around.

If you want a good looking backpack that can fit a

- 17" MacBook Pro
- HMC150
- Tripod holder
- DSLR + extra lense.

Get a Dakine Mission Photo. It's 2 bags in 1. You can put the padded bag inside the backpack or just carry it out. There's also a protective rain cover located in the bottom. I got it for $120 CDN. There's also several styles and colours to choose from.

the problem with those ogio ty 2 bags is that the build quality is below par for professional use. i went through 3 ty 2 bags in like 6 months. and no, i'm not rough with my gear at all. i wasn't over loading it, unlike my kata, which i way overload, but it can take it. i blew out the laptop zipper and main compartment zipper on all 3 bags and one of the bags the should strap started fraying apart. they are reasonably priced for what they are. if you're only using it a couple times a week, it should be fine. but for everyday use i wouldn't waste my time with it.

and i'm not knockin ogio bags, i use one of their monster golf bags to hide my bike in when i fly(to avoid that $150 charge) and i've logged a good 50k miles and it damn near looks new.

their target audience of that bag isn't the professional every day user. its the 15 year old skate filmer who sticks a vx1k w/mk1, a bescor setup and some tapes and films a day or so a week with his buds.

but i do like its layout and function, i just wish it were built tougher.

Really? Wow, that's crazy. I use mine nearly every day, along with my friends and haven't had an issue yet. I'm also pretty rough with mine, just not when my gear is inside of it though. I'm always tossing it on the ground at race tracks. Not disagreeing with you on the build quality though, I totally agree it could be much better. Especially with the back padding. I've got two CRAZY knots in my lower back right where the bottom of the bag has that reinforcement barrier. It digs right in my back and hurts like hell. But for the price, I can't really complain.

I must have just gotten lucky with a decent one or something, haha. Looks brand new still and I use it like crazy.

I'd honestly much rather have a nice professional bag or something though, for sure.

I'm also looking to get a backpack style bag for my HMC150, so this thread has been pretty helpful.

I physically inspected the Kata 207 and 205 and for my body size (5'5), the 207 is just way too big for me, but the 205 seemed like it almost wouldn't fit the camera. Can someone confirm that the 205 fits the HMC150 without any problems?

That actually looks pretty sweet! Any chance you can snap a photo with your HMC150 in it? I'm just trying to get an idea of the size and how the camera fits. How is the protection?

Ultimately, I'm still leaning towards a Kata bag just based on the feedback I've gotten from other people. I recently saw a new bag on their site (VB-510), but I can't seem to find it for sale anywhere.

Didn't want to necro any year-old post to give my hard-case info, so I'd thought I would just throw this down and unbalance your soft-case thread.

After much research for the perfect HMC150 case, I bought a Pelican 1510 hard case with padded dividers.

Cons as I see them.

  • Cannot carry lift/carry comfortably over any significant distance.
  • Heavier in general than a soft case of similar size
  • TSA might think you're a terrorist.
  • Case cannot "scrunch" or bend as sometimes needed when a space is slightly too tight.
  • Doesn't write you screenplays (not very good ones, at least)
  • Fairly small/will not fit extensive kits
  • Attracts too many hot girls; causes lowered work productivity.
  • Terrorists think you work with TSA.

Pros as I see them

  • Dust proof, truck proof, bomb proof (maybe)
  • Rated to float in salt water with 64.2 lb load
  • Watertight to 30 feet underwater (if your gear weighs 64.2000001 lbs)
  • Good listener
  • Lockable
  • Fits in the majority of airline overheads
  • Wheels and extendable handle allows case to be pulled along on smooth surfaces
  • Company will replace case if broken in any way, for life
  • Arrangeable dividers allow streamlined organization
  • Ever-present apple crate
  • Can be used in home defense (with some creativity)
  • Can be used to house other sensitive equipment when not being HMC150 armor
  • Will be with you (unless stolen) until death or divorce
  • Guaranteed protection from CandleJack
  • Can be used to prote

Here's the "inside" bag that you can put inside the backpack. It contains a Nikon D90 + HMC150 + accessories.
