Carrying HMC150 in a backpack

Has anybody tried this? I'm wondering how one safely carries a HMC150 in a backpack. Does one place it with the lens hood facing down - ie. the weight of the camera resting on the hood? Or remove the hood and let the weight rest on the front end? Cuz there aren't many other ways it will fit in the backpack.. or is this a really bad idea :)

I'm picking up a Domke F1-X and some leftover foam for its permanent home, but in the interim I need to get it around for one weekend and the only bag I have of suitable size is a backpack..

Yes, I'd say it's a bad idea. There isn't enough padding.
If you're just trying to be inconspicuous about it for a single occasion and padding isn't a concern, those re-usable "green" shopping bags work well.

Lol that's a comical picture to imagine.. and hmc in a re-useable green shopping bag

I would not put it in a backpack. I had my mac in my backpack.. placed it down on the ground a bit too hard apparently and it has a bend to it now. Wouldn't trust the hmc in there

:bath:

get a propper backpack...like dakine or Ogio Ty Video 2 Bag . about $130 or so. I use a kata for my dvx but they are more expensive. it would truely be a shame to mess up ur $3500 camera cuz of that.

I'm using a Burton Camera bag. The kata backpack looks really nice but the price is higher.

If you have to use a regular backpack, add padding! Those camping matress (blue foam) cut up to line your bag would help.

Yup..thanks for the feedback. Don't worry, I am only using the backpack for a weekend before the real bag gets here. :)

Again, is it safe to place the camera facing down, resting on its hood?

As long as there is no pressure on the mic...the camera will be fine if its handled safely in the bag.

I agree with JWitsen the cam should be fine, also the hmc is more durable than a mbp or any other laptop. (except the panasonic toughbooks!)

I have my camera backpack configured for lens hood facing down. Don't really like it that way but seemed better than resting the eye piece on the bottom foam.

Downside to backpack style cam bags is that when people help you huff your gear into a venue etc they tend to "plunk" them down, while I gently place the bag on the ground.

Upside is they don't look as obvious to thieves and of course easier to carry long distances.

Ideally I would have a shoulder bag and a backback bag. I'd like a large shoulder bag for those run and gun shoots where being able to place the camera with shotgun attached into and out of a bag quickly is required.

the good thing about the Kata backpacks are the potection. I duno about the otther bags but i could roll my kata backpack down the stairs and be fine. (not that i will ever :) ). But the outer hard "shell" thingy they have and the inside padding is good to say the least.

here's what my backpack looks like, kata hb207

How high are the side walls with the Kata? That looks a lot like how I have my Burton arranged, but with the mic holder attached there is a bit of pressure on it when I close the bag up.

The Burton unzips from the side that faces your back so I have the cam handle pressing into my back a bit. Not a lot but enough to make me leery of actually using it for snowboarding. Might use it for snowmobiling though since we're mostly in fresh mountain powder.

That model Kata bag is definitely wider than the Burton. But hey, I got mine almost new for a hundred bucks off some photographer that had way to much gear fro the bag. So I can't complain really. :)

Just Cram it In there!!!

Just Cram it In there!!!

For What it's worth, I've been shooting quite a bit of climbing lately and sometimes I'll just wrap my 150 in a jacket, and stuff it in the top of my pack on top of all the climbing gear...and it hasn't broke yet. It turns out it's a pretty durable camera. That being said it seems like everytime I struggle to deploy and re-pack the camera from my top loading pack... I tell myself "one of these days you really ought to get a pack that's made for this!!" ...one of these days.

Denwa my kata 205 wall is about 8 inches. Mangler's version is the bigger one to mine...so i cant really tell how high that one is.

Ogio ty evans backpack hands down. I have one along with 2 of my friends who both have an hmc and an hpx and we all love it. I haven't had any problems at all with my camera and I've been carrying it in there for at least 4 months now.

the problem with those ogio ty 2 bags is that the build quality is below par for professional use. i went through 3 ty 2 bags in like 6 months. and no, i'm not rough with my gear at all. i wasn't over loading it, unlike my kata, which i way overload, but it can take it. i blew out the laptop zipper and main compartment zipper on all 3 bags and one of the bags the should strap started fraying apart. they are reasonably priced for what they are. if you're only using it a couple times a week, it should be fine. but for everyday use i wouldn't waste my time with it.

and i'm not knockin ogio bags, i use one of their monster golf bags to hide my bike in when i fly(to avoid that $150 charge) and i've logged a good 50k miles and it damn near looks new.

their target audience of that bag isn't the professional every day user. its the 15 year old skate filmer who sticks a vx1k w/mk1, a bescor setup and some tapes and films a day or so a week with his buds.

but i do like its layout and function, i just wish it were built tougher.
