CARRY-ON - A Caffesse/Wildman Film

I can feel it too... it feels like someone breathing down my neck.
Sunday is right around the corner.

I'm only taking this moment to post because I have something rendering as I type.
Still need to fix the color in two scenes (after messing it up)....
...audio is just about final.

All in all I'm pretty happy - but as I go along I discover more and more things I'd like to tweak. But there comes a point where you just have to let stuff go (at least for this fest). Otherwise I'll never get it finished in time.

1:25AM - and I just now got something that doesn't look I colored my short in with crayons.

(though if it did actually look like that, that would be cool. But it didn't, it just looked kinda crappy).

1:27AM - still waiting....

1:28AM - gonna turn in early tonight I think....

1:29AM (the future) gonna push submit with a final word of encouragement for you <insert encouraging words here>

drink coffee. It's good for you.

Later,
Jason

UPDATE - because I know you're all just on the edge of your seats...

3am and I think the color work is done.
Exporting it now to send to a few people for general feedback (not that I have time to change anything really).

Still have some audio tweaking to do as well as putting credits on it and some other odds and ends, but I think I'm at about 90-95% done now.

Whew.

Seems like we are close to a finished entry:

alright - I think I'm done..... or as done as I'm going to be.
(almost)

Might be swapping out some music, and still need to check credits for typos, etc.
But other than that this thing is as finished as it can be to leave me enough time to encode and upload.

I'm running a couple of compression tests right now - we'll see how chewed up this looks when its done. I'm battling that damned gamma shift QT Apple issue, the MOV I rendered out of FCP looks awfully washed out compared to what I'm seeing in FCP....
so we'll see.

Alright - I'm getting some sleep.

Cool, man. Glad to hear that you are locking the edit and moving on to compression/upload.... Woo hoo!

Mod Squad first time festers unite!

Congrats, man.

later,

Good luis. I too am hoping to wrap it up today and upload, so I can help my GF on a photography project tomorrow.

Looks like this is turning out to be a big fest!

Luis, you worked in Color correct?

Correct, I did work in Color. But don't let that make you think that I worked in Color 'correctly.'
:)

This was kind of a test run for me on the program - took it as an opportunity to force myself to learn the interface and some of the basics. I can see how (if I knew what I was doing) it can be a very powerful program. I'm looking forward to really getting into it in the future.

Unfortunately - the H.264 files I've exported so far seem to look washed out by comparison to what I'm seeing in Color or FCP. It's a shame to do any color work just to see it kind of ruined by the compression -but I'm not sure I have much time to mess with it.

In fact - I'm still trying to change one thing in the short, due to virtually unanimous feedback. Hopefully I can make this one last change (yes, it's always one more) and be done and uploaded in time.

Luis, maybe PM jack about that. He had the same problem last time around and I think there is some setting in compressor to overcome it.

Will do - I'm assuming at this rate I won't be compressing and uploading until tomorrow unfortunately. But I guess that gives me a little more time to figure this out.

First I have to deal with a bit of an audio crisis.... trying to get a hold of our actress so she can ADR a line. Ugh.

QT7 compatibility with FCP ... why Apple why?

Two things:
1) make sure in QT 7's preferences you check the "enable FCP compatibility" button to on.
2) make sure that your monitors are calibrated too Mac native gamma 1.8, not 2.2, PC gamma which is much closer to TV which is darker. Sometimes people make the mistake of saying "I want my stuff to look right on PC's and certainly on TV's so I am going to calibrate to 2.2" or "I'm working with video so gamma closer to TV must be best so I am going to calibrate to 2.2".

Logical thinking perhaps. BUT the problem is FCP does this thinking for you and automatically compensates for the brighter Mac gamma on the fly while you are looking at the image in FCP ... so it makes it darker.

So ... you need the "enable FCP compatibility" button to on.

If you don't have it on your videos will look brighter.

If you have your monitor calibrated to 2.2 vs. 1.8, then FCP is making the darker gamma even darker and your videos will look double bright in QT.

Well that's the puzzle.

Even before this update with QT 7 things would always look different on a PC than a Mac. Things would look darker.

If you stream your movie in firefox it will look darker than if you stream it in safari.

It used to be that for web encoding from a Mac it was suggested that you give it a gamma bump of .2 to .3 brighter because it would look darker on PC's. So you would do a gamma adjust in compressor from 1 to .8 or .7.

There are only two things you can do, the first should "solve" most of these issues as much as they can be "solved" make sure your monitors are calibrated correctly especially with the Gamma to 1.8 not 2.2. And keep your images broadcast safe. This will make the differences minimal. To test this theory out ... download nice trailer from the Apple website of some big film and toggle the FCP compatibility button on and off. You will see that it gets a touch brighter or darker, but that it still looks good. Again its because they were working off a properly calibrated monitor and keeping levels legal.

For calibration I recommend the pantone huey pro
http://www.amazon.com/Pantone-MEU113...2416165&sr=1-1

it's just too hard IMO to manually calibrate LCD's without manual controls, blue punch and with the way they auto adjust in some instances. Plus the huey even recalibrates your monitor automatically if you change the lights in the room.

Look for my blue gel for monitor calibration thread
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread...ue+calibration
which turned into a calibration thread

Thanks Jack.
I'm not sure in which version of QT the 'FCP Compatability' option was added - but I've got QT 7.1.6 and can't find that option anywhere.

Ugh...really don't want to update QT yet seeing as there are other bugs out there to deal with...I've been waiting for a solid update.
