Capturing DVCPROHD direct to laptop

How is capturing HD directly to your laptops working out for you? I've been thinking of selling my FS100 and just getting a MacBook...

Do the framerates and resolutions all come over OK or are there some limitations?

MacBook Pro... not MacBook.

While I do live capture, it can be scary and I would rather have the fail safe of something written to card/disk. So, I would not sell the FS-100.

And it totally limits you to static shots with relatively little movement.

You can live capture (if you have proper NLE, etc.) any of the recording modes from the HVX, except for the PN modes. PN modes cannot be carried over the firewire stream, via live capture. It's a limitation of firewire... Other than that, shouldn't be much of a problem.

I use a macbook pro and DVrack to capture staight to Hard drive. You would of course have to run bootcamp wich has it's problems....a little finiky with Dvrack, but overall it works pretty well. Make sure you buy apple care with you macbook pro, they have been known to have bad Hard drives, mine has failed on me twice): Or just go the cheaper route and buy a cheaper dell(or something) and DVrack for the price of one Macbook. PC laptops perform just as well as Macs, Yes yes I'm a mac guy and I'm saying it, there is no performance difference only software differences.

Would a MacBook not handle HD capture? I'm not concerned about editing on it.

I think in most situations I would use it to offload in the field with a dual systems adapter... but the times I have static event capture I could use the MB.

It *should* be ok, but I dont' know Mac's.... I know folks have used fairly crappy computers to capture dvcpro HD with DV Rack...

The problem with DV Rack, is that it's no longer available as a stand alone application. It is now called onLocation, and is part of Adobe's CS3, so that kind of eliminates it as an option.

Though, if memory serves, there was someone selling their copy of DVRack in the Marketplace last week??? I'm not sure.

I can't really help you on the mac side of things, but I can tell you on the PC side, that folks have done live capture of DVCPRO HD, with single core machines that are less than 2GHz

MacBook does not meet FC Studio specs. Read the specs on the Apple site.

You might be able to run FCP on it. But MacBook Pro is the model that meets the specs.

I've had good luck and stable performance doing documentary interviews using a direct capture system from HVX to MacBookPro (using FCP) and out to HD. I do this on location and it works fine, but its a complicated setup. In all, I've recorded about 25 hours this way, and the system has never failed.

It was recommended to me (and I recommend to you) that you buy/use a firewire - expresscard adaptor for this system, to convert the Expresscard bus on the MBP to a firewire 800 port. Turns out the firewire 400 and 800 ports on the MBP share the same bus, and this will cause a conflict when importing via FW and then streaming out via FW (to external HD).

I use the Duel adaptor/MBP for shorter off-loads in the field. I wouldn't shy away from the system, but have backup plans just in case.

If you want more detail let me know.
