I have to capture some interviews outdoors in portugal next week for a charity golf event. I have an AT875r on the AC90 but I also have a Zoom H4N and in particular i Have a shure beta 87 handheld mic to utilise

Can anyone advise the best way to do this for a quick turnaround (need to show the footage 24 hrs later)

Thanks

PS can imagine windshields may get mentioned here too so appreciate all advice

The AC90 is capable of recording audio that will work for you. Your best bet is going to be connecting your shotgun mic (AT875r) directly to the camera via XLR cable. However:

1) The rule for microphones and dialog is "the closer, the better." Putting the mic on top of your camera is not going to do you any good. It needs to be no more than 20" away from the interviewee.

2) Best placement will be boomed from overhead. If the interviews are seated or otherwise stationary, a simple mic stand with boom arm will suffice. If they are walk-and-talks, you'll need a skilled boom op.

3) Yes, wind protection outdoors is necessary. If it's a standard day, a foam windscreen may be fine. If that doesn't work, a furry cover for the foam windscreen may be in order. A blimp (with or without furry cover) is necessary for higher winds.

4) Connect headphones to your camera and USE them. If I you aren't listening, you aren't recording. Monitoring during production is the only way to guarantee that you get what you want and need, and it's the only way to detect and fix problems as they occur. In the edit bay, it's too late to fix something you could have fixed on-location. And if you have a boom op working with you, he or she needs to be the one monitoring the sound.

5) There's a sound forum here on DVXUser that's full of good information on audio for film and video. You might want to poke around there, read the yellow stickies at least, and see if there's anything that will help you in your situation.
