In his peripheral vision, Miguel saw the referee draw in his breath and raise the whistle to his mouth to signal the end of the game. He had scored twice in the 4-1 victory over the highly-regarded Dutchmen, and pride stirred in his breast as he turned to join his teammates already celebrating on the sideline. As he did so, he noted the ball arcing high upfield in his direction, but paid no attention as he considered that his countrymen would regale him as a hero for his stellar play in the upset victory over the smug Europeans.

In the same instant, as he turned toward the sideline, his field of view crossed the open end of the stadium, and the stars were particularly bright in the moonless night sky. There it was! The Southern Cross! How many evenings had Miguel sat with his mother on the porch of their ramshackle hilltop rancho, overlooking the corral, while she sang him the little folk song about the Southern Cross? How many times as they sat there had he promised her that he would be rich and famous and would build her a road to the Southern Cross, so she could go and see it, touch it, have it for herself?

Tomorrow would be the second anniversary of her death. Tomorrow's newspaper would spread his fame and make him a big-money prospect in professional soccer.

"MAMA!, MAMA!!" he shouted to the Southern Cross, as he burst into sobs. "MAMA! I did it! I--WHAM!
