Can't "Print to Video" my DVC Pro HD project from FCP5

Hey everyone,

So here's the deal: my short film "Perfekt" just got accepted to a film festival in Staten Island, and they want a MiniDV version of the film for the screening. So, from FCP5, I've been trying to "Print to Video" my DVC Pro HD 720p24 project onto a MiniDV tape via Firewire to a Canon XL-1. The problem I'm having is that I get all the audio recorded onto the tape just fine, but no video whatsoever.

I've tried a few different settings, mainly "DV NTSC" and "DVC Pro HD 720p24," and I've read up on the same issue others have been having, and I'm no closer to understanding the issue at hand, and no one else seems to have an answer either, so I'm hoping someone here can give me at least a steer in the right direction.

I also tried printing to video a straight DV project of mine, and it worked just fine; so, needless to say, I'm very confused at this point (three hours and change trying to figure this out!)

Initially, I was going to simply record the timeline onto MiniDV, but FCP isn't cooperating with me on that front either. Any help or info on how to get this project onto a MiniDV tape would be really helpful, since the deadline is coming up for me to send the tape over to the Staten Island Film Festival.

Thanks in advance,
Trigonis

Still Can't Record, even from Quicktime...

Still Can't Record, even from Quicktime...

Hey Noah (and everyone),

I tried exporting the project, but I kept it at "Current Settings" because I couldn't find anything that said "MiniDV" on the drop down menu. I might be (actually, I'm sure I'm) doing something wrong. Do I export as Quicktime Conversion or Quicktime? Maybe that's it? I'm gonna try again, but I'm ruining these MiniDV tapes through trail and error (and I've only got three!) Any other info would be awesome. Thanks again!

Sincerely,
Trigonis

Still can't "Print to Video" not even from Quicktime

Still can't "Print to Video" not even from Quicktime

So I tried what NoahK told me, but I'm not sure if I did it right since when exporting as a Quicktime movie file, I found nothing in any drop down menus that said "MiniDV" on it; so I simply exported the FCP file as "Current Settings" but then, I wasn't even sure how to get the XL-1 to "see" the Quicktime file in order to record it. I'm sure I'm just not doing something right, since this is my first (and hopefully only) time having to make a MiniDV version of one of my films. If there's a very simple way to just record my film onto MiniDV, please let me know how and what the steps are in doing so (since I've already been through Lisa Brenneis's Visual Quick Guide to Final Cut Pro 5, and for the first time it was of absolutely no help (makes it sound easy, but for some reason, I can't get this to "print." Again, any info, instructions, or a five-step program to get me through this ordeal in one piece would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Thanks again, in advance.

File - Export - Quicktime Movie

Change the settings to read DV NTSC 48 kHz Anamorphic

Then make sure the 2 check boxes at teh bottom, recompress all frames and make movie self contained are both checked.

Save.

Now the only issue i can see is the fact you shot 24.. and dv ntsc is 30.. someone who knows teh whole pull down system is going to have to tell you how to change you.

Im a pal boy.. so never really apply pull downs..

You can export to DV at 24p as well and it will play out with the proper pulldown automatically to Firewire. Don't make it harder than it is. :) Mini DV = DV NTSC QuickTime.

You have to learn your tools and one of the easiest is to explore your menus and export dialog boxes.

Export Using QuickTime Conversion.

Format/QuickTime/Options.

Settings - Compression Type - DV/DVCPro

Size: 720x480

Audio:48 KHz/16

Thanks for the awesome tips and advice everyone. . .

Again, I really appreciate all the help (and patience!)

Still having problems with this process...

Still having problems with this process...

So I exported my DVC Pro project as a Quicktime Conversion, DV NTSC all the way and everything else NoahK and everyone else mentioned, but the quality was very poor, and I'd set it at "Best." Then, of course, I still don't know how to actually get my camera to "see" the Quicktime file to record; it still has that blue screen rather than the black screen in the viewfinder.

What I'm doing now (my last ditch effort before getting it professionally made for me, I guess) is saving the project as a FCP project formatted for DV NTSC (instead of DVC Pro HD 720p24) and hopefully from that I'll be able to "Print to Video" and all will be well, since I'm thinking there's some problem with going from DVC Pro to SD DV to tape, or something like that. I don't know...I'm at a loss here, but I appreciate all your help, and if you think something else might work better, please let me know.

Sincerely,
Trigonis
