Can't format HD from the camera

I just bought a 160G HD (firewire) and can't get the camera (HVX200) to recognize it. I've got the camera set to 1394 host and it works with another drive that I use (that I gave to a client...thus the reason for the new hd). I'm not doing anything different that I can think of but it won't recognize it. I tried using yet another drive I have (Graid) and I'm finding the same thing. Any clues what I may be doing wrong? I'm using a 4pin to 6pin firewire cable. Thanks for any help you can share.

These drives are both bus powered and edison. The new one is a Firelite Smartdisk portable HD by Verbatim...160G 5400rpm. The g-raid which exhibits the same results when connected to the HVX is a 320 raid 7200rpm. The one I handed to my client is a firewire enclosure I purchased and put an 80G drive in. That workd no problem...the HVX recognizes it and I can then format and download directly from the camera. Any ideas? I must be overlooking something.

The HVX does not supply bus power. any external FireWire or USB drive needs its own battery (rechargeable is good).

Many portable laptop-drive enclosures have 5V DC inputs; if you had some manner of Tekkeon or other battery that supplied the appropriate voltage then presumably you could use those enclosures as battery-powered externals.

I'm using edison to power the drives...I know the camera does not supply bus power.

I think I've discovered the problem however. The drive did not come with a power adapter and I think the one I was using was not giving it enough juice. There is a special AC adapter made specifically for the firewire drive I bought (Smartdisk Firelite by Verbatim). The USB version also has it's own supply. I went to the Verbatim Corporation website to find out about the power supply and they list where you can purchase it...B&H etc. Every single retailer they listed have the USB AC adapter. None of them have the firewire AC adapter. I've asked them where I can get it and have not heard back from them yet.

I too use a firelite drive, I power mine from a 12v sealed lead-acid accumulator that I originaly bought for another job.
