Can't Decide!

Just curious, was that an official DC statement or comments from one DC person? I've heard they like the DVCPro 4:2:2 better. In fact that's what they wanted on a recent shoot that I had to turn down due to an injury.

I'm wondering if that wasn't just an employee makeing a "statement" because the Sony is a newer option or other predjudiced opinion?

Hey Ted!

How the heck are ya?

A couple companies that produce shows for Disco have been told by Disco to shoot on the Sony HDV or EX cam... These are productions that they will start shooting in the next few months. Deadliest Catch / Storm Chasers etc...

Two seperate companies for each of the above shows... Disco is big on Sony's...

Paramount was big on HD players (they were paid $150 mil).... Now it's blue ray...

i say that you'll be happier with the 170 - as long as youre pretty sure you will never need to shoot SD to tape.

i have a client i shoot furniture store tv spots for. we shoot the english stuff HD to P2 card, but the spanish editing company can not injest P2 so we just switch over to SD and shoot to tape.

this is pretty much the biggest decision factor between the 200a and the 170

i dont get what he's trying to say. the 200a BLOWS AWAY the 200 in low light use...

Yes, I agree that it does blow away the hvx-200! With the new upgrades it's still not that impressive, I'm an hvx owner. I do wish Panasonic would get in high gear... Panny is getting left behind...

I find this very hard to believe, especially since they have approved P2 on HDD for a deliverable, and have awarded the AJ-HPX3000 thier Gold Standard, adn yest the 6 part mini-series on the Iditarod was commissioned by them. I think the folks in charge are mostly in favor of high quality pictures that tell a story.

Best,

Jan

Jan,

The new season of thier highest rated show "Deadliest Catch" is not being shot or your comapnies camera's nor are several other shows...

They are being shot on Sony's and yes I'd like to say that these are shows that require a sharp quick focusing HAND HELD camera for run n' gun stuff...

HPX 3000 is an AWESOME camera, it's just not a good one for run n' gun fast action adventure reality tv...

Jan, a lot of it probably has to do with the work flow issues and small P2 cards. The sony V7's record to compact flash, $1000 = a whole pocket full of CF cards that would be good for 10+ hours before a download....

Hand held is where it's at for 2009-2010...

um this comes down to one thing, do you ever need to tape? i mean mini dv? there are amny things you can do to bulk p your camera to make it more stedy, witht he extras , only go with the hvxa if you need tape.

now for the more important question this topic has brought up.

Theres a freaking channel for disco? did i miss something? Has my history failed me? did the Nazi's win WW2, Did beta win over vhs, is blue ray a thing of the past, Did disco actually survive the onslaught of common since this country finally had in the 1980s?

I mean come on people we killed disco for a reason, if you bring it back, who knows what horrible monstrosities might plague mankind as a result, I mean doesn't anyone remember the hustle?

Maybe they were right, maybe you can't truly kill evil, maybe you can only keep it locked up deep down, untill it boils back up, and then we must send out bravest, or most rockingest to fight it back.

the battle will be bloody, many rockers will die, but by Ozzy;s guitar, I swear we shall prevail!!!

but yea, only go with the 200a if you need tape.

Left behind in what way?

Pray tell.

The phrase "blows away" is wildly overused in discussion like these, sort of like how the word "awesome" has completely lost its connotation of anything remotely resembling awe (it's so worn out by now it's basically interchangeable with "ok"), but I digress...

The HVX200a's low light and noise performance improvements do indeed "blow away" the 200...

...dude...

Ted:

I couldn't agree more. "Awesome" means nothing now. Everything from the latest cell phone plan to the Great Wall of China is "awesome."

When someone posts that a particular cam "blows away" another particular cam at roughly similar price points, to me at least that comment loses credibility.

I understand the colors are richer, the picture clearer, etc.

But like good wine, everyone has their tastes -- and there is no accounting for taste.

:)

Red wine blows away white wine, dude...

Totally...

And, like, how come there's no blue wine? I mean, it's from, like, grapes, right? Blue wine would be so awesome...

Okay, now that is FUNNY! It made my day!

Chip, I am not certain of why you think that this Sony promotion is necessary in the middle of a thread that was a question about whether to buy the HVX200A or the HPX170. I do find it odd. There are a good number of shows on Broadcast that have been shot with HVX200 cameras, for a very incomplete list, check out Barrys thread on that at the top of this forum.

Work flow on P2 has been accepted by Discovery with Masters on HDDs. And Compact Flash vs. P2 is a completely different ball game, and YOu know every time this gets brought up it hijacks the thread to something that is not relevant to the origianl question. So again I wonder why you bring it up? This forum is supposed to help people understand the technical choices.

People are using their appropriately sized card, we are not working with just 4 GB cards anymore, they are all the way up to 32GB now and at 24PN that is 80 minutes per card. But not everyone likes the bigger cards, they like smaller cards.

And for run and gun, I think the HPX170 has some really key features that will make it excel as such. So please let's get back to the original poster's question, helping him decide whether to purchase the 200A or the 170.

Thanks,

Jan

And...FYI...Panasonic is making AVCHD cameras that have the HPX-170 form factor (and also a shoulder mount model) that capture to CF cards...if you want to go that route.

Jan,

The Discoevery Channel has my hard drive right now, we are in talks about them licensing some of my footage for a show called "Storm Chasers" that will air in October.

In all my emails and talks I made it a point to tell them it is DVC Pro HD 1080 in 4:2:2 color space and not HDV 4:2:0... I have also let them know there are no rolling shutter issues with the hvx, they can get bad filming all the lightning and emergency vehicles with the Sony's.

I'll know more this week, when I do I'll start a new thread about it and the processes I went through to help others out here.

Thanks!
Chip

yea i figured that one out, and yea it was a joke
