Canopus Edius Broadcast

I think the reason nobody was answering is because the product wasn't out yet. I think Edius Broadcast has only just now been released, right?

Just got my Edius Broadcast upgrade 500 dollars. And, I believe it's worth it.
Tried several clips from my HVX200--720:24P--720:30PN--1080i. All worked on the time line in real time. You bring in the audio mxfs separately and you get all four tracks.
Will play with i further and see how work flow goes.

Cheers

Interesting, what is your computer set-up??
How did you bring the P2 in???
Thanks

Dual Xeon 3. With the Edius NX Boards for HD. Real Time Componant out. Put it together a year ago for HDV, now upgraded with Broadcast.
I used the HVX 200 over the USB 2 port to bring them in and saved the files on the hard drive. Have not tried to bring the P2 cards directly into Edius.

Cheers

Keep us posted.I am an Edius NX Dual Xeon 3.4 user since March last year. Shoot with FX1 . I have been impressed with Edious. My background is Toaster, Adobe, w/Matrox, FCP.4.5.
Producing industrail training for companies in NC. I purchased the HVX 200 Dec 21 from B&H and still waiting . I will be upgrding to Edius Broadcast soon.
Good to see another Canopus user with HVX...

Anyone interested in Edius Broadcast can download the Edius Pro demo from canopus.com and try it out. It has all the features except the DVCPRO codecs and support for the HVX200, Varicam and other DVCPRO cameras. The Broadcast version is Edius Pro combined with the Varicam add-on and one other software add-on that I can't recall at the moment. They were all available separately for a lot of money (the Varicam/DVCPROHD pack was $900 by itself), but now that they have all been lumped together, they MSRP for $999.

I gave Edius (with the equivalent Broadcast options) a spin at a local shop and was very impressed with its performance and support for MXF. Unfortunately, it doesn't work for me right now because I need something that integrates better with my workflow (lots of 3D animation and comp work) and Edius was lacking a few features that I depend on with Vegas. I also looked at Avid and it wasn't the answer either... So, I opted for Final Cut Studio on a G5 Quad. Yep, it's an expensive solution in comparison, but I can use the Quad for other things... It's been working well as 4 CPUs on my render farm since I got it.

Edius Color correction is very usable and in real time. You can drop a CC on an 5 minute HD clip and it will play in real time. We use it all the time at the TV station in conjunction with the waveform and vectorscope.

Our main productions at this time showcase the visuals of the Sony HD camera and not the edit system. We do documentaries, travel shows, gardening series, and commercials. We average 5 tracks of video and 7-8 tracks of audio. Fancy animations are created in AE and imported. Edius comes with a very nice titler called TitleMotion Pro. It does multi layers, 3d animations, keyframing, etc. This is a powerful tool we are now just learning. Nothing is perfect, but Edius is getting us on the air quickly and with the kind of quality you would expect from a broadcaster.

Aside from the other weaknesses mentioned, Edius could beef us it's pan and scan feature. I'd like to zoom in closer at times. Canopus makes a very nice program called Imaginate that does this beautifully and quickly (better than AE in my opinion). I wish it was part of Edius.

Generally, very satisfied and looking forward to 4.0.

I'd also like to add that after trying out Avid Xpress Pro HD, Edius, Final Cut, and playing with Raylight w/Vegas, Edius has the best performance for DVCPRO[HD] on the PC by far. It's nearly as good as the performance in Final Cut Pro, but it has FCP's butt kicked as far as the MXF support. Seriously, for $1K (or probably less as more dealers start selling it), Edius Broadcast is the best choice on the PC right now for the HVX200. But I just advise downloading and playing with the demo with regular DV or HDV footage to get a feel for it. If it works for you, then the choice is obvious... If it doesn't then there's always FCP on a Mac or the sluggish hell of using Raylight with Vegas or Premiere. Rumor has it that Edius v4 should be formally announced at NAB and it should have a LOT of new features and abilities.

If Edius 4 adds the masking features I need and a few other little things, I will probably make it my next PC editing solution. I'm digging into Final Cut Studio right now and while I'm pretty pleased with it and pleasantly surprised about a lot of it, it's still not anywhere near perfect. The whole mentality of making everything a QuickTime based workflow is just mind-numbingly stupid. To just throw away the MXF and metadata on import is just dumb.

Edius is really good

Edius is really good

I use Edius for a long time. I have made hundreds of tv programms, documetaries, short features using this software. Now I make a lot of HD, HDV projects with Edius. It has it's own codec - HQ much better than Pana DVCPRO HD (better resolution, better color sampling). So all projects I do with HQ (which can be edited much faster and better than for example native HDV). I use a lot of filters (CC,WB,softening, sharpening etc) a lot of sound filters, transitions usuallly on five VA tracks and up to 6 - 7 audio tracks , titles etc - all in real time. Chroma key is really one of the best from NLE also in RT. Of course if you want to make FX any editing systen is not for it. I don't know any which is capable of doimg it. But Edius has 30 very usable video filters,10 audio and abot few hundreds of varoius transitions.Special effects I usually do in Boris Red or AE. Edius also is friendly to Premiere so you can use it if you want, but comparing with Edius work in Premiere is a nightmare. It works with P2, MXF, DVCPROHD,HDV, XDCAM,DVCAM, SD uncompressed and much more with all known frame rates. I recomend it honestly.

And the info keeps coming. Great ! It will be intresting to hear from someone that uses Edius for capturing with HVX with a laptop.

i have not used hvx but i have used the p2 cards (dvcpro50) with edius and its pretty seemless, i inserted the cards into the laptop and in edius bin there is icon for p2 cards, open it up and drag the files either onto the timline or bin and start editing, or if you want copy the files off the p2 onto your harddrive and edit them from there...

not much to it, dvcpro hd mxf files work the same way

What kind of specs does your laptop have? Have you done any rendering, And, one more question please , have you viewed the file on a large screen using the laptop?

1 gig /3.02 p4 its an hp zd7000 with 17" screen...my laptop is ok spec wise, all the files were dvcpro 50 and i viewed them on an ntsc monitor after i outputed back to p2, i never had to render anything during editing although it was light simple cuts some cc and i droped in a program bug, all editing was done in a La Quinta INN :)

Do you think your laptop and Edius would work ok with 720p HD variable frames from the HVX? I am going to purchase a laptop just to use with the HVX, and any thoughts you may have about using Edius Broadcast and the HVX are very helpful.. Thanks

I asked this in another thread but could someone who has Edius Broadcast report if the Canopus HQ codec shows as an installed codec for windows and can you import these files into Premiere or vegas? Usually system codec are available to decompress and recompress in any NLE. I would love to edit in Edius and then do effects in AE or coloring in Premiere. I guess I could export uncompreesed but that is too taxing on a modest system.

Thanks

Yes, let's hear the answer to that one. And, do the files retain have an "mxf" name extension? I don't see how software designed for AVIs is going to open MXF files, since it'll be looking for an AVI header that contains format info (like the codec ID). It seems that you'd need to put the DV50 material in a regular AVI wrapper.

Can the Canopus system ingest and export DV50 & DV100 material in AVI files?

I never thought of that! I guess I was assuming that it would ingest .mxf files and spit out some type of avi. What if you want to edit material from another DVCpro workstation that is not in an .mxf format? Hmmm.....

Just to clarify - to use Edius for DVCpro HD do you need the broadcast version?

What exactly is the difference between broadcast and normal
