Canopus Edius Broadcast

So any reviews ? I ll be glad to know about its capabilitys beyond NLE. What about chroma keying? We know so little about this software and it is the olny one that can be used with PC with 100% MXF/DVCPRO-HD support for capturing, editing etc.

Actually, VelocityQ and VelocityHD are two others. However, these are hardware/software solutions that are not cheap. BUT if you're making real money editing and shooting, it can be an awesome solution. I've been using it for 3 years and I don't know how people live with these software-only solutions. Velocity is uncompressed/compressed, real-time everything, with 6 real-time graphics layers and a bunch of other cool abilities like compositing app preview. I don't think I've rendered anything since I got it, outside of the After Effects and Fusion comps I do. You can find used VelocityQ machines for maybe $10-12k, but VelocityHD is much more, mainly because of the storage you'll need for HD. I don't know why people thinking about doing indie films don't think of VelocityHD, as it's the only app that keeps virtual copies in TGA, JPG, TIF, and a number of other image formats for every frame in your show. If you were doing a filmout, you would just save all those frames from say the TIF folder and take them to the lab. It's called the Virtual Tape File System, and it's pretty darn cool, and available only in Velocity as far as I know. Don't know much about Edius - doesn't look bad. If you don't have to share EDL's or metadata with others, it looks like great solution.

Its over a week now I posted this thread and no one seems to even care about canopus ! Well I have some news thought. I just spoke with canopus (Greece) and I am glad to say that I found them quite informed about their product, and that is something ruther new to me with my previous experience with adobe. I wrote in an other thread that when I fisrt called adobe and asked them if PPRO2 supports DVCPRO-HD their anwser was : is this a new camera type ?
So Edius Broadcast suports DVCPRO-HD, as we all know, and this with a minimum requirment of 3ghz cpu 512 RAM PC. The guy I spoke with said that he was an adobe freak for the past six years but he is quite amazed by the sofwares stability and workflow. He also added that the chroma keying feuture and color corection is uncoparable. I realy don't uderstand why no one seems to even consider Canopus, why everyone is stacked with adobe and considering even swithing to Mac without first give Edius Broadcast a try. Am I missing something here? Am I going to be the first around here who will give them a chance ? Barry you said that you probably concider Canopus, any news ? Do you guys know that Canopus have been bought from Thomson ? Things getting intresting here. I love to hear from someone that actually done some work with the HVX. Is there any ?

I posted a question on the Creative Cow Canopus forum about P2 about 2 weeks ago with no replies. It's the same old thing, the best software usually gets overlooked because of no marketing.

Indeed Canopus make a good software/hardware solution, but there are several problems with edius (i own the 3.5 with nx). It lacks too many options.

I think Edius is a great software if you're making only "cut editing". (well for the moment)
If you want some more, you'd better go on another soft. But, there is no support but monitoring for these other softwares, so your 2900€ ($) card become useless. :undecided .

I do own a Matrox RT2500 with premiere 6.5 too, and for SD editing, i think it's still the best, the "cheapest" and easy to use solution, thanks to the Adobe Video Collection...

But now for HD, the new broadcast solution seems quite good... i'm sure i'll make the upgrade as soon as i have my HVX. (it's only 500$ more for a 1 month and 6000$ computer, ) i 'll make a report soon i hope, but the hvx release in France is still far away...

I use Edius 3.6

I use Edius 3.6

Very nice program. My TV station owns 50 Sony Z1s and Edius is all we use. Most of the news editting is done SD, but my department only does HD on dual processors with Canopus graphic boards. Lots of real time effects. Keying is top notch.
I had a chance to meet with the President and Founder of Canopus (Mr. Hiro I believe) for about an hour. We ran through his program to discuss improvements. The next version, 4.0, should be a major breakthrough as far as getting it up to speed with FCP, Avid, etc. Having said that, this system rocks right now. I can take 10 minutes of 1080I Sony HD footage and add 5-6 layers of effects/color correction before it slows down. No waiting. Hit play and wow your friends. You do have to render the "final product" but the workflow up to the point is nothing short of amazing.

When I asked Mr. Hiro about HVX 200 he just smiled. Off a p2 card, Edius sucks it in and spits it out like it was DV. That's because Canopus and Panasonic have been working together on P2 since it's inception. I've seen this work on our larger Pannys with P2 cards. Wow is all I can say.

I use to buy Avids back in the day for $100,000 a room. Ours Edius systems go for $7,000. Includes computer, software, hardware, monitors, mouse, and keyboard.

I've tested most of the NLEs out there, Premiere. Avid, Liquid (I own), FCP, Vegas, and they're all great. For speed nothing beats our Edius HD setup.

Hope that helps,

jim

Jim, what hardware do you ue. I want to use it as software only just like Liquid. In fact I own the Liquid Pro-box which gives me component SD-out for $ 500. I don´t think anything gets near Liquid when it comes to speed and versatility. I heard praiseof Edius, but it requires hardware support, doesn´t it?

What hardware are you talking about? Computer or Canopus boards?
I have the same Liquid set-up for SD. Liquid is a slug by comparison. Liquid does have a better feature set, ie, more control of key framing, better trim window, and audio. But Edius is far-far from a cuts only system. Remember, Canopus just got bought by Thompson. Expect big things in the future. In the 90's software based NLE's ruled the day. You did not need real fancy cards. With HD, I'm not so sure anymore. If you track my logic, Canopus/Edius is poised for a breakout if they continue to listen to customers.

I think you are right, maybe NAB will be a good springboard.
The editing/hardware situation is so nuts right now that I have decided to wait it out until the bodies are counted up.
Plus if I have as much fun with my HVX that I had with my DVX I may just retire from editing alltogether!!!

Can you specify what are those options that it lacks ?

Some effects, transitions, grading and sound options (not only vst, dolby etc) and other things i don't know the words in English...

This is why I said, i'd better use other softwares for more than cuts only. I was thinking about After effects, Audition, Soundforge...
but I use Edius about a month only, maybe i missed something...

Edius is a good and very promising product but it still needs some improvements, though I admit i'm still learning it. I know Final cut, Premiere since 2.5, and Edius 3.5 is more like Premiere 5.5. it's quite good, i think.

It's true that since they ve been bought by Thomson, Canopus will to give us very good tools for editing...

edius is a software solution ONLY...

you can buy it with a combination hardware card that will give you input and output, depending on the model of the harware card is what kind of i/o you will get

still even with the card its your computer thats doing the processing....

edius lacks these major features:
- a keyframe engine for all effects and transitions (currently some have keyframes some don't, it really needs to be updated)

- a matte tool for doing moving masks and garbage masks, also transitions & filters don't fully support alpha channels

- slowmotion ramping tool, current solution although real time and offers progressive modes only allows for single number inputs

- nesting and multi angle editing

- ac3 surround sound, it allows ac3 editing now, but no surround sound

all of these issues are to be addresed at nab 4, i have personally used the multi angle tool and it works pretty much like in vegas, just with more rt out put...

i have been editing dvcpro 50 on edius since early last year, on my laptop the speed is on par with editing dv, edius loves the dvcpro codec almost like it was built around it...

edius is not a prefect solution but it does more then just cuts...

Yes, it's was a "way of speaking", but that 's why I think (and do) for now. I used After Effects and SoundForge for so long that everything that is less well done... I just cannot use it. I'm sure it will change with time and upgrades... And I 'll be happy if they upgrade Edius with all the things you and I mentionned.

I do a lot of commercial work and it is usually so effects intensive that I usually do it all in AE. It drives some clients nuts that think they need to see it all in real time. I tell em to go down the street and pay $1000 per/hour if they think they need that. I can render a low-res
preview so quick now that the real render time for a :30 sec spot is not really an issue. Eventually if I could find a decent edit program that would help that workflow that would be great. But I just cannot imagine having to use PPro!!!

Finaly some feedback ! Those info are valuable to me and I beleive to many others. So, it seems then that edius broadcast can be used for capturing MXF files straight from the camera while shooting (no need for P2) and then edit with a PC that is probably best to have 3.4 CPU 2 Ghz RAM Raid0 (no need for Mac or more expensive harware) and then as I was informed from Canopus you can export your footage to any format you want for further manipulation (after effects, audition or Sound Forge or whatever. That's great ! But what about chroma key and color correction. Has anyone tested those two capabilitys that acording to Canopus are way better then other NLE software ?

I know this is a bit off topic but once Edius Broadcast is installed on a PC would it be possible to capture and acquire HD from HVX and then edit in premiere pro? I realize PPRO has no presets for it but if you set up a custom one and chose the Canopus HD codec would it work? Of course no realtime output and maybe even slow performance but is this even possible? Or vegas maybe?

I am just wondering if once you get an HD codec on your PC if that opens up option for editors that don;t natively support it?

better...i don't know is fcp color correction better then vegas, is ppro better then avid express???

edius cc tools can get the job done, i might add in rt...i preffer to do all my extended color work in ae using plugins but for simple secondary and primary cc work edius gets the job done...

might be a good idea to get the demo...
