Canon's 4K Cinema EOS Official Announcement & Latest Info-NAB 2012

Let's compare these prices to shooting 35mm film. Because that's really what it's meant to replace.

I'm still scratching my head as to why everyone is in tears about the price....

To my recolection, there are only 3 other large sensor 4K cameras:
RED Epic - $38k + accs.
RED Scarlet - $20k, basic shooting package.
Sony F65 - $85k, basic shooting package.

Canon just undercut them all.... The only one that comes close, the Scarlet has some pros and some cons compared to the C-DSLR.

If the C-DSLR features were packed into a C300 body (stripped of HD-SDI, XLRs etc).... Everyone would be going wild with excitement.... They manage to put it in a much smaller DSLR body, and every expects a DSLR price.

and I think the disappointment comes from the realization that quite probably there won't be any big-sensor Canon video cameras under $10K for some time

Looks pretty amazing actually, way beyond the price point of "buy" for me, but if it rented at 1/2 or 1/3 the price of an Epic I'd be very eager to give it a trial run.

...or using a vari ND filter - so you don't have to compromise more creative tools like shutter speed and aperture.
An other plus of vari NDs is, that you get the exposure spot on not only in the neighborhood.

Hä?

Full Frame produces a smaller/more shallow DOF than S35, no matter what ND filters you put on it. That has nothing to do with it. The DOF of F2,8 on Super35 equals to the DOF of F5,6 on Full Frame.

Sorry to single you out, pupfiction007, but it's pretty clear to me a lot of people weren't paying attention at the Cinema EOS announcement. I tried to keep reminding people of this when all the speculation was flowing about the C-DSLR and it's speculated $6k - $8k price tag: Cinema EOS is created and designed to cater to the professional market. Not to no-budget indies, not to hobbyists, and not to enthusiasts. It's got the highest end features available packaged in a unique way and priced accordingly for it's feature-set in the market it's meant to play at. It's just that simple.

Yes, it's clearly aimed at the highest-end professionals - but that doesn't mean that market doesn't appreciate the versatility that a DSLR form factor enables.

I'm one of the ones that said 7K and I agree, I wasn't paying attention enough in this case. Definitely wasn't expecting 15K. Does it have HD-SDI out? Waveform, so on and so forth? I didn't read any specs yet, but if it doesn't then it truly doesn't sound like it's crafted for that sector.

My guess was that they were going to try to push their cinema glass more than anything, but guessed wrong.

Canon's got a trump card, that being it has the only Full Frame video option available right now, and they're playing it pretty hard. Can't blame 'em, with tech depreciating so fast, other companies throwing out curveballs, gotta keep something in your pocket.

Gotta do what ya gotta do.

Looks pretty amazing actually, way beyond the price point of "buy" for me, but if it rented at 1/2 or 1/3 the price of an Epic I'd be very eager to give it a trial run.

And here is the real question: who's renting this?

5DMKIII rentals look to be about 200/day (in LA, not sure about everywhere else)

How much is this thing gonna rent for? 600 body only? Cool. I guess it'll be the only way to get projection-worthy Full Frame.

C500 then is what, 800/day? Cool.

Epic outfits are renting for 1000/day~1400/day depending on who you know and I'm seeing EOS kits going out for 800/day. To whom are these cameras renting too?

Not trying to start a flame war, legitimately inquiring as to where they sit in the rental market? I guess there's room for everything.

Yeah but this camera doesn't do 4K at full frame. Read the press release again.

People are in tears about the price because what the original DSLR "revolution" was about was- sacrificing all the bells and whistles of a normal video cam to get large sensor video capture....in relatively inexpensive bodies. I think most in that realm could do without 4k....just a really good 2k MJPEG would be good enough for example. This camera is just another realization that Canon isn't aiming cameras towards them...me included. and that's fine, that is there decision as a company. But people are entitled to say what they feel about it.

The EOS-1D C - another elitist camera for the elitist market. Canon was once a poor man's knight in shining armour, now they are nothing but a snobby courtier. The FS700, whether or not it is as sharp as the C300, is the new peoples champion. Might as well order the Metabones EF adapter now, considering the long wait. Goodbye Canon, it was fun.

I can't believe Canon didn't make this camera mirrorless ! Will Sony's a99 kick it's butt for a fifth the price ?

You are right. Forget what I said, I´m out of my mind today.

As to who would rent, I think it's pretty attractive to the micro-budget crowd (like me).

The DSLR form factor and EOS mount means I can use existing glass (though using cine lenses would certainly be even better) and support gear. I could get by renting body only where with Epic I'm going to have to get an entire package. The 5D3 isn't available for rent here yet that I am aware of, though it may have come in to the local rental houses and I just don't know. A 5D2 rents for about $75 a day body only.

$600 a day is a stretch for the 1DC, but it would still make it the cheapest route to 4K available. $300 or $400 a day, I'd VERY strongly consider it.

I don't know why - but I feel angry. Very angry. Maybe it's because when the MKIII as released I told myself "It's fine... we all expected that. But wait until this 4k DSLR comes out. It will eat the industry up, we'll all be shooting 4K with great codecs!!" And now... it's released... at $15k!!

I don't actually know where this comes from. And no, if Hollywood wanted to shoot 4K compact and hand-held they could still use a scarlet. It can be very compact. And they get some serious features with that.

Always forgetting about the little guys, the guys that got you here Canon! Give us a decent HD camera, doesn't need 4k, at a very competitive price and watch as you swallow the market up. Actually, just give us the C300 at a ridiculous price and you'll make all your money back!

15k for a DSLR? That's a joke right?

This backs up my earlier point.... If it weren't in a DSLR body... Everyone would be going wild with excitement.

If feel for Canon.... Everyone asked what they disliked about the 5DII (aliasing, moire, audio)..... They fixed it, people keep on moaning (the only legitimate moan is the HDMI cripple)....

They bring out an amazing 1080P broadcast camera that is right up there with the best at a price equal or lower than the competition.... people keep on moaning.

They then bring out a 4K camera in the smallest, lightest form imaginable, shooting to a nice codec in log and price it $5k lower than the closest competition... people keep on moaning.

No doubt, the C500 will come in under the price of the F65 or a kitted out Epic... and no doubt people will keep on moaning.

I'm sorry if this offends anyone, but the sense of entitlement among film makers these days is just ridiculous.

Wait...

it's not Full Frame 4K?

NOPE....for full frame you get HD much like the 1DX. "optimized for video".... yeah right, and an HDMI out option....that's a lot of cash over the $6800 1DX with the same 18MP sensor, same lowlight performance, same controls.
