Canon's 4K Cinema EOS Official Announcement & Latest Info-NAB 2012

So for $15k we get a FF35 4K camera that can shoot RAW, 4:4:4, 4K@60fps, 4096x1080@120fps, clean HDMI out, and offers the portability of a dSLR.

I don't know, sounds like a good deal to me...

Wrong those are the specs for the C500 which price hasn't been release yet.

If it really is $15k, that's actually kind of a relief. Makes picking a camera much easier! Looks like it'll be the FS700 for me (though I doubt we'll be getting 4K off it for less than the cost of the C-DSLR).

A vistavision-sized sensor, 4K, 4:2:2 recording internally to CF cards (with 60fps 1080p available) is awfully appealing though.
But at 8-bit? Sorry, a crappy video codec in a $15,000 4K camera is dumb.

Canon mentioned c300 price higher when they first announced it, if it follows the pattern it should sell ~11k or 12k

"The higher-end C500 requires a dedicated external recorder, but offers two full-RAW output options: 4096 x 2960, that will be better suited for motion picture capture, and 3840 x 2160 for 4K TV. Both of these modes offer 10-bit 4:4:4 at 60 frames-per-second...we don't have pricing for the C500 or lenses just yet, though we're told that the camera will be significantly costlier than the $16,000 C300 -- both use identical sensors"

So the C500 has the exact same sensor as the C300. Is it even possible to get 4k 4:4:4 off that sensor?? My understanding is that it simply doesn't produce enough color information with the bayer pattern.

I don't think the general Canon 5D MKII/III usergroup were those Canon aimed for either. You must understand that a lot of high-end productions (top notch Hollywood studios) use the DSLRs for their flexibility and size. This camera feels like the go-to cinema camera for those who need that compact size.

what we got is canon 1dx with full digic 5 power unleash ...
i hope that magic lantern guys are ready...

Where did you read this?
Honestly good luck Canon... With all the cash you did by seeling EF lens and 5D mark II, i would have expected a different price policy. Anyway, this time it will be without me.

it seems you don't understand 4:4:4 :)
RED Epic has a Bayer pattern sensor, and you can get 4:4:4 from it, Alexa has a Bayer sensor, you can record 4:4:4 with it. Read through this where 4:4:4, 4:2:2, and 4:2:0 is explained! http://carousel.hu/c300/

And by the way... everybody wanted a DSLR with a clean output with the pricepoint between the 1DX, and the C300. Now that it is here, everybody's complaining...

You can argue that the 5DII was the "everyman camera" that the Scarlet 3k for 3k was suppose to be, and Canon fell into that accidentally (ACCIDENTALLY!). We now know for sure that Canon went directly from the "everyman" to competing with the top of the line Red, Arri, Sony, etc. with their Cinema EOS.

While all these cameras are amazing, I feel like they're abandoning the price point of most customers who purchased HDSLRs. It is as if Ford followed their successful & affordable Model T with a luxury Rolls Royce class vehicle.

The thing that I just don't get is that Canon has been very good at having many levels of cameras. In their still cameras they've released consumer, prosumer, professional, higher end professional. Even in video, the release of the XHA1 & XHG1 (and XF100 & XF105) showed that they'll release an affordable camera & the exact same camera with professional options not found on any other camera in that class.

Canon has left the game, Sony & Panasonic can now battle it out for the affordable HDSLR built for video users.

Did no one learn anything from the C300 release?

On paper, this doesn't look that appealing (compared to the obvious comparison, the Scarlet).

But, if it utilises the 8bit/4:2:2 codec as well as in the C300.... This could be a dream.

Full frame with the same image quality as the C300, but at 4K.... All recording internally. Is no one else seeing this as HUGE news for the price bracket?

For me the problem is full frame. It´s just too shallow. Always would have to stop down to F5,6 or lower.

I guess it all boils down to how good the image looks. It definitely sits at a price point that does not make it a clear cut choice.

Who's complaining?

You are right, I do not understand color sampling :) Thanks for the link.

But you can bump up the ISO quite cleanly to compensate for that.

Very, very promising this news from NAB...

From the Canon Press Release:
4K video is captured by an approximately APS-H-sized portion of the full image sensor, while Full HD video can be captured in the user's choice of two different imaging formats:

  • 1. The standard Full HD setting captures the full 36mm width of the CMOS sensor to achieve the largest possible angle of view for any compatible lens.
  • 2. An optional Super 35 crop setting enables cinematographers to match the industry-standard imaging format and angle of view achieved by traditional motion picture cameras. This enables video footage from the EOS-1D C camera to more closely match the look of footage from other cameras in multi-camera shooting environments.

So what this is saying, if I understand it properly, is that you cannot shoot 4K video at full frame 24x36mm only APS-H.

What was the C300's RRP? $20k or $16k?

Hopefully, this drops in at a street price of $11k-$12k mark.... If the IQ is C300 style, i'm all in. Buzzin!
