Canon's 4K Cinema EOS Official Announcement & Latest Info-NAB 2012

Canon's takin' the world by storm. No regrets here about my MKIII purchase, however I think the C-DSLR and C500 are going to be serious contenders for new projects.

Who's complaining?

I'm still dreaming about all the best features of a 7D + XF105 at the price of a 7D + XF105 made by Canon. It seems like Canon is trying to make the next Red & not the next DVX. Sony & Panasonic already have flavors of that, so I'm happy with that & won't complain about Canon, because I'll just be looking at Canon's competition.

Now I understand why the 5DMKIII is producing soft video, time to put my money into Magic Lantern guys. :)

Right! There's no reason why the MKIII couldn't have a 4:2:2 codec or clean HDMI-out. The hardware is able to do so. Add that strange and obviously deliberate OLP-crippling. All that proves that Canon could build a full frame c300 for 3.500$ - IF they wanted. It was Canon who sparked the revolution but they turned absolutely conservative. Thanks to Magic Lantern, James Miller, Vitaly & co. the revolution goes on! If the industry doesn't give us a fully workable camera for 5.000$ at a c300 level those creative minds might create it for even less.

For me the problem is full frame. It´s just too shallow. Always would have to stop down to F5,6 or lower.

...or using a vari ND filter - so you don't have to compromise more creative tools like shutter speed and aperture.
An other plus of vari NDs is, that you get the exposure spot on not only in the neighborhood.

You can't beat this C-DSLR for guerilla run and gun. The same reason that Hollywood used the MK2 for a lot of under the radar shooting is why they and others will flock to use this camera, even at 15K. The form factor is an unbeatable option for crash cam/guerilla 4K.

It can record 4K video onto CF cards. That is amazing. What other camera can do that, at this price point? Please don't say Scarlet. The FS700- maybe.
But it looks like the JVC HMQ10 is quite the 4K bargain - $4,995. And onto SD cards (x4).

I'm wonder what the compression in order to get it onto the CF cards does to the image. There is much more to an image than its size of frame. Only time will tell what the tradeoffs are.

Well woo freakin hooray for Hollywood then! But for the normal person, who this is not aimed at...(I get it....don't yell at me) You spend 15k and get...a camera with no XLRs, a fixed screen, no View finder, no peaking or focus tools, no ND filters, no stability...so this will cost an extra couple of thousand in frankenrig equipment like any other DSLR. I'm glad some people love it...I think it's an overpriced 1DX made for people who don't care what they spend for buzzwords.

"The camera's ability to record 8-bit 4:2:2 4K and 8-bit 4:2:0 Full HD video to CF cards eliminates the need for an external recorder and enables workflows with increased mobility."

Why limit the full HD to 4:2:0 when 4K is 4:2:2? Must be trying to protect the C300? It kind of does away with the small form factor if you need an external recorder to get 4:2:2 full HD. I hope my understanding of what they are saying is wrong. Can someone else confirm one way or the other?

We might be wrong about this c500 being $25k. Going by Canon's naming convention so far (higher numbers for lower models) and looking at the housing for the c500 I'd more expect it to be the c300's smaller and cheaper sibling...

Sorry to single you out, pupfiction007, but it's pretty clear to me a lot of people weren't paying attention at the Cinema EOS announcement. I tried to keep reminding people of this when all the speculation was flowing about the C-DSLR and it's speculated $6k - $8k price tag: Cinema EOS is created and designed to cater to the professional market. Not to no-budget indies, not to hobbyists, and not to enthusiasts. It's got the highest end features available packaged in a unique way and priced accordingly for it's feature-set in the market it's meant to play at. It's just that simple.

Yes, it's clearly aimed at the highest-end professionals - but that doesn't mean that market doesn't appreciate the versatility that a DSLR form factor enables.

No - Canon uses higher numbers for higher end models in video-centric devices. It's larger than a C300, has a lot of far higher-end and advanced features, and will undoubtedly be priced accordingly.

I have to say the images of the camera on page 1 of this thread make it look really cool. I've always like the look and feel of Canon equipment more than Sony and especially Panasonic.

It's too bad that most of the Canon stuff I want is out of my price range. Hellooooo Sony and Panny!
