C100: Canon XC10 Info & Pre-Order Link Texas Media Systems

This seems like a brilliant camera for journalists. Low-profile, high bitrate, gets the job done.

That is who Canon is targeting with this camera. Professionals who don't want to use an iPhone for their work.
Not intended for independent movie makers.
Going right after the Sony X70 and outdoing it right out of the box. (Glad I didn't buy one)
The question is, which NLE's will support XFAVC when it ships?

This thing will be completely discontinued in 8-10 months.. What were they thinking when they approved that demo video to be uploaded on Canon's youtube account?

Wanna bet a hundred bucks?

My bet is: in 8-10 months it's going to be one of the most successfull broadcast cameras, and CNN/BBC/EBU will buy TONS and infect the world, I bet in that time, every broadcast camereman around the globe will be carrying one on the streets...

Again, look closely at that XF 50mbps 4:2:2 codec and ergonomics suited exactly for broadcast. Canon knows where they are aiming with that camera. They are not as stupid as many think, why is this camera 4:2:2 when everybody else isn't? broadcast. That's why this camera will be introduced to an entirely different industry the FZ1000/RX10/AX100 could not touch. They play this game very well, from the days of the Xzf305 to C300 to XC10.

Why is it 4:2:2 when Canon are the most cheapstake compamy in giving specs?

If you're not in the broadcast industry then this camera is NOT for you, you'll be paying a
big premium over the RX10/FZ1000 for a marginally better camera yes but most importantly youll be paying it for EBU approval which means nothing to you as a regular shooter, it's politics.

just remember this in a month: XC10 marriage with the Broadcasting industry.

Multimedia Journalists that shoot/report themselves from the field yes but I can't see the traditional broadcast camera man shooting on an Sony ENG cameras being asked to use an XC10 anytime soon. The ergos have nothing suited for broadcast but it would work for the field reporter carrying a small camera and doing it all themselves.

I would be willing to bet a lot more then a 100 bucks :) The codec it is recording to means very little when the image quality coming out of it is 3-5 years behind present tech. 4:2:2 is a standard, NOT a necessity(especially in todays world where more and more broadcast is going web). In the few jobs I have done in broadcast the producer/client cared less about the codec and more about the actual content. In 8-10 months there is going to be a SLEW of small sensor/fixed lens cameras hitting the market that will do 4:2:2 in a smaller and more ergonomic package for a fraction of the cost.

So in a month they will be married, and in 8-10 divorced.. Sounds about right :)

I think it could do very well. There is one thing though. I dont see any ND filters!! For a replacement to a 1/3"eng type cam they will need them.

I find that true. Beyond the "broadcast specs" which are a bit arbitrary, but need to be met, codec should never be divorced from image quality. That's why it's puzzling to me why there is no interframe 4K codec. I just do not see multimedia journalists dealing with 250 mb/s. It just slows down the process. Transfers take longer, cards fill up quick, it will fill up your laptop SSD so fast your head will spin. I wish Canon had a 100 mb/s interframe codec. At my organization we go through 10 TB a year with 50 and 35 mb/s formats. If I started shooting in Canon's 4K, it would go up to 60 TB per year. We just can't handle that amount of data. The cost in dollars and lost efficiency just isn't worth it.

That's not to say I won't get an XC10, I might. But I probably won't ever be shooting in 4K. It just doesn't make sense to me why Canon can't have a smaller bit-rate 4K format in addition. Do they not know how to do it?

ENG TV guys need a shoulder mount camera. No one wants to hand hold a 1-hour press conference, or follow Tiger Woods around a golf course hand holding. That said, I can see this causing a rethink at TV news departments. I'm in love with my A7S because it is light enough to handhold for a decent length of time and the viewfinder works. This isn't true for any of the EOS C cameras. Add a monopod or one of those things that puts the weight onto a belt and this might have a big impact. But, ergonomics will matter, as will exposure and focus aids, and we'll just have to wait and see about those.

The lens is the weak point on this IMHO. And what's with that flimsy lens shade? Maybe the XC20 will have a zoom with a short end that's 24mm equivalent and constant f2.8.

Why can't people see just how utterly silly it is to talk about a v2 of a product that isn't even shipping v1 yet

At $2500, Canon's New 4K Camcorder is Actually a Bargain

The new Canon XC10 ($2,500) splits the difference between a camcorder and a camera, although Canon is billing it primarily as a camcorder. The company says the XC10 was built with roving journalists in mind. It captures 4K video and 12-megapixel stills with its mechanical shutter and 1-inch-type sensor—the same size sensor found in Sony’s RX100 cameras and AX100 4K camcorder. This time, that imager is baked into a body that looks like it should be comfortable to use when shooting both stills and video, and that’s a rarity.

still no indoors shots, makes you wonder about base ISO

I guess I'm a bit behind the times, but what crap are they ramming down our throats? I have to watch this kind a content to feel like an artist??? it's kinda like the disconnect between the scientist who invented the A-Bomb and reality....... Fark this shiete!

Canon had the XC10 in their "See In The Dark" portion of their NAB booth. They really shouldn't have. It looked like smeared dog poo at 6400, which is how they had it set. Ugh.

Disappointing. Looks like my search for the perfect B-cam to go with the C300 continues.

They say they're making and marketing this for journalists, yet they give a pre-production model to a narrative guy to make a promo video with??? Head is being scratched...

And ditto on the ISO comment.
