Canon T2i - Trying to capture audio with boom mic

Hey everyone,

I am trying to capture simple audio with a boom mic connected to my T2i. I have an XLR to 3.5mm cable going into the MIC IN port on the camera but for some reason the audio is recording very poorly. I can hear faint noises but it's very muffled and veryyyy static-ky. The battery in the shotgun mic is good and the camera records audio fine when it does not have the mic plugged in.

Can anyone help? Is there a setting I'm missing on the T2i or is the mic just bad?

Thank you!

The line in into the camera has poor converters and heavily compresses the sound and that brings up floor noise and hiss.

I'd suggest you get a portable recorder. Something like the zoom h4n, zoom h1, or the other countless models out there.

well with the t2i you need to remember it has the auto gain control and they are working on the magic lantern hack but go to youtube and look up come videos on how to overcome the AGC lots of different workarounds before you but a recorder

granted the audio isn't that great but it should still be identifyable and good enough for youtube type stuff If you can't easily hear whats being said , I'd check your connections. AGC (for the most part) doesn't even work (or isn't active) while you have sound being recorded.

What do you mean by boom mic? Mics are mics and there are none that are called "boom," although many mics are frequently used on a boom. You're using a boom to a mixer to your camera? Is it line or mic level? More information, please.

I have a 60d and a Rode NTG-2. Will a simple XLR to 3.5mm cable be sufficient to record quality audio directly into the camera? Or will I need a Beachtek or some other more expensive adapter?

Agreed. But there's no reason that using a simple cable like that would degrade what the 60d is capturing, right?

One thing you have to check is Phantom power. I don't think the camera powers the microphone. Go on Amazon or ebay and get a power shotgun mic...you should be cool after that
