Canon T2i Owners = Where's the footage, where's the beef?????

Nope! Just thought it might mean a whole bunch of people new to the whole HDSLR thing would be looking at it and thought I could help with some questions having shot on or at least played with pretty much all of them.

Just seen your latest clip on Vimeo and I must say very nice! Funny thing is I actually liked the shots from the Panasonic Gh1 with Kit Lens, blew me away......

Also what kind of camera are you using now since it seems you are not using dslr?

thanks

Also +2 to move this thread to the T2i forum

I'm using the GH1 mostly actually. I'm shooting a student feature on it right now along with the EX-1 (because some smartass screen writer decided to put scenes in a forest and I'm not taking the GH1 into there...that's like rule 1) and, if the firmware update is actually out in mid march, the 5D for some stuff (our production has a longer cycle than most as it's a student project shot on weekends...we do have a large cast and crew...probably 30 people total.) The rationale with multiple cameras being that we can get the best out of each one for specific scenes and use the GH1 for most of the stuff since it shoots 24p, has shallow DOF, and we have the most ready access to it (me owning one.)

I feel like as long as we're using the cameras for different scenes and not intercutting it shouldn't be too noticeable, especially after color grading, etc...in terms of image quality they all hold up pretty well with each other but there is a distinct look for each...well illustrated by this little vid we shot, in part to test that, but mostly to hopefully end a few flame wars with a general consensus that all these cameras rock:

Actually the EX-1 (stock lens) reminds me of the GH1 a lot more than the HVX (stock lens) does...no EX-1 in that video though.

Yeah two of my favorite shots from that video were kit lens (train tracks and the slow motion pointed down the cliff)! Glad you liked it!

"The initial reason for transcoding to ProRes was to work with a more editing friendly codec. However, I am no longer recommending this because the video range is limited to 16-235 RGB (as Oleg summarized so nicely). Instead, edit in H.264 and render your Color project to ProRes, giving you a broadcast quality final Quicktime which can easily be compressed for Vimeo or print to HDCAM SR or what have you in FCP."

Thoughts?

Looks like we NEED Barry in here to clear things up!

Who Oleg the audio guy? I never saw the post.

There are other iframe codecs out there other than prores.

Also I try to keep an open mind about it, technology changes, software improves. All I can
vouch for at this point in time is that if you edit h264 with the current version of final cut you can get into trouble as described above.

There are so many NLE's and even more codecs. Choose whats right for you.

We have no tolerance for personal attacks here. If I see any more of this behavior in this thread I'm booting the offenders permanently. Last warning.

I've cleaned up this thread.

My first test shoot using the Canon Rebel 550D T2i, and first time trying to shoot video on an HDSLR. Shot some stuff over the weekend and early Monday morning in the Dallas area. Overall I learned a lot about the pros and cons of shooting video on an HDSLR. I think the footage will show the good and bad and what to look out for, so might be helpful to some.

So now that people have tested this thing, can I get a few comparisons against the DVX vs. T2i?

:)

Dvx?

DVX shoots standard def which compresses horrible online, online is the avenue for media. DVX while a great and amazing camera the lack of HD kills it.

I have to say for the record that the DVX-100 (original, A and B) can look amazing online. Especially now that all the major online video players have increased there maximum file size limitations. I have actually uploaded a very short, full rez, direct from Final Cut movie and it was treated very well by the Flash conversion.

All of that being said even though I have not touched or seen a T2i, it has to "look" better then my trusty DVX. I will start a thread and do head-to-head comparisons if I make that plunge. Having bought an HVX 9 months ago I am a little short on the "new camera" budget.

So you mention your film, but provide no link......... That's great
:violin:

Simple math here, unless your shooting on film ( which the DVX doesn't) then you can't even believe that yourself. I have shot/worked with a DVX on many many projects and for online media no matter what player you just cannot compare it to a HD camera.

Sure there is great footage with nice lighting, great story, amazing locations , HEAVY CC and the use of VERY expensive adapters that brings A+ quality, but an SD camera just does not hold well when compared to another Pro HD camera using the same settings.

Heck I still love the DVX though and wish it were better (internet), like that I wouldn't even have bought a T2i !

Many users of a DVX100 with the Andromeda mod would disagree.

A company that no longer exist with a Mod that cost in the THOUSANDS......

That's funny to me.
I'm just saying that the camera is technically capable of more than what you've insisted, no matter what one has to spend and do to get it there. I've never owned or used a DVX100, so I'm not speaking as a fanboy.

So you speak on something you have never used or owned to someone who has..... Now that's even funnier to me. Also if you modify a camera that already cost $1000+ with some system that cost even thousands what are you really doing? Also how can you put money into a company that no longer exist?????????

Ok I have a Honda Civic and put 50k into it so I can race faster cars, why not just buy a faster car..... Ohh I get it, because it's a DvX :violin:

What's there to criticize or dismiss if I make a valid point?

I never even proposed or suggested that a current DVX100 user should attempt to get the Andromeda mod. Please reread my earlier comment carefully. I was referring to people already own or have access to an Andromeda DVX100.

Personally, I'm with you all the way regarding the logic and economics of the Andromeda mod. If I did own a DVX100 and had the option to get the Andromeda mod, would I have done so? No, just like you I would've sold the camera and gotten a proper HD camcorder. But when I first read about the mod years ago, my thought was, "Cool, I never imagined that an SD camcorder was capable of such things." And that's my point.
