Canon Rebel T2i

It's not just You Tube - the res. is way lower on video than on pics (even if these pics are scaled down) , just like the 5D and 7D. this would be even more apparent without the compression to some degree filtering both video and stills. you can see teh res difference even watching it on a small window, or from far away.

Why on earth would Any DSLR manufacturer put xlr inputs or powerd zooms on a Stills cam?
These aren't video cams, they are stills DSLRs that happen to record video.

I don't even think now we'll see better codecs or even less moire / artifacting since it isn't important to the target market, who by and large regard the video functionality as a frivolous distraction not a core atribute.
Dave

At this price level think birthday videos.

OK...Let's all understand that while that is TYPICALLY TRUE....it is NOT the case for VIDEO on DSLRs. Let me explain:

(all pricing from imaging-resource)

2700.00 for the 5d Mark II
1700.00 for the 7d

"You get what you pay for"

The video is the same...or so close to it no one can tell the difference. (Except for the fact that the cheaper/newer camera has 24P and additional frame rates.) This is NOT the first time this has happened...it's not the last...

1800.00 for the D300s
1300.00 for the D90
850.00 for the D5000

Many would argue that they are (all three) IDENTICAL VIDEO QUALITY. I'll give the D300s the benefit of the doubt, but NO QUESTION the D90 is IDENTICAL.

"You get what you pay for?" FOR VIDEO on DSLRs that is simply NOT TRUE. I hope and pray that this trend continues.

Not like anyone cares, but my theory is simple: Video is a SIDE NOTE on these devices. Therefore, any additional functionality (like additional frame rates, 24P - instead of 30P)....they are just throwing it in because it won't be the difference for someone to buy it?!

Let's hope we continue to fly under the radar. I'll NEVER forget the SHOCK and SURPRISE in this forum when the 7d's specs were revealed. No one could BELIEVE that it costed LESS than the 5d...when it had MORE functionality. "You get what you pay for..."

True...just not when comparing VIDEO on DSLRs...may that trend continue for all of our sakes.

Here we go again: People CAN'T BELIEVE that the T2i has the same video as the 7d. At first glance (not definative)...it appears to be the case...and by extension (if true) we are buying a 800 camera and shooting video that is the same as a 2700 camera. THE SAME VIDEO. THE SAME. SAME.

Let's all hold hands and pray that they don't find out that Kholi will give his left nut for a 7d without aliasing. :) (Kholi's girlfriend will be VERY mad....expecially when Canon is too dumb to know that we'd all happily pay more for a 7d than a 5d Mark II...just for 24P, let alone variable frame rates.)

FOR NOW...you DON'T GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! ....you get what Canon will give away, not knowing an entire market place would pay much more than they are asking...

The 5D, aside from frame rates, is in many ways a better camera. A key difference is full frame sensor size. The tiny number of pros I know who still use the 5D for video (after too many botched shots and headaches) prefer it over the 7D. Twixtor artifacts are minor compared to a 1.6 crop.

I do not doubt that. However, the cost difference and frame rates had a very simple out come: People got rid of their 5d in favor of a 7d. The 7d became the camera to purchase instead of the 5d (for indi/dslr/film). There are already 25 people (so far...at this early juncture) that will get rid of the 7d for the T2i. Many entry level folks are going to DIVE IN to the DSLR game because the PRICE is disproportionate to the functionality.

@HHL
I don't disagree that we're getting the same great video at different price points, but it is in fact a tacked on feature which has a lower ceiling to it. I can't imagine Canon doing a whole lot more than what they currently have in the 7D and T2i. Do they have reason to?

We're not going to see these cameras coming with powered variable speed zoom controls, XLR jacks or many of the other features dedicated video/cinema cameras come with. This is where we hit the ceiling and this is where you get what you pay for; features most consumers don't need but pros want.

Once pro video cameras get the chip sizes that DSLRs have that's when the price differences will begin to make sense again.

I follow your logic. Good point. I agree with everyone else however....(It looks like the kinda jumped on ya!) :) I do see what you are saying.

I am NOT buying one unless Canon fixes that file size limit. Period.

That's good that you know what you want. You must do events? For those of us who are doing other stuff....that doesn't really seem to be a big issue. If I were doing events, I WOULD NEVER use any DSLR as my only/primary cameras. For additional footage...heck ya! As a primary...never. The GH1 doesn't have this issue...have you considered it? (If you do events, I STILL wouldn't use it as your only/primary cam)

I do lots of events. it's not a hobby. it's my bread and butter. I have been waiting a long time for a camera like this. Not perfect, but if Canon would at least read what people want in a camera rather than what a tourist would want, perhaps they can gain a lot more loyal followers. Canon already has a line of amateur cameras up to the G11 and others. How about a little add ons like an accessory like the battery grip that instead of having all that space for batteries, is to reduce the battery to half size and the remaining space put them XLR,s for audio and a firewire out/in. Come on, there are other battery technologies out there that are smaller than li-ion with more capacity. Also and this would be very nice , is to have a flip to the left lcd a la GH1 along with a killer flash that doubles as a flash and constant led videolight. High output efficient led's are out there , just check out Cree's XP-G. I can design something really nice.

Very cool. Good for you. It appears as though your general needs favor the GH1 future. Videocam flavored DSLR. I think the future there is very bright. Some say the GH2 is near! Good luck with that! :)

This overheating thing is BS. The file size limit is for export taxation revenue. That will be ironed out. Think ! how come there is no overheating issue when the clip limit is reached and you immediately go on to record the next clip limit and so on ?? GH1 I believe doesn't have that issue. The only issue I have with the GH1 is the no can do at 1080P 30fps thing.

well actually there is quite a well known heating issue with the 7D for long recording times..

maybe it will be gone with the t2i only having one processor though.. the point is if your new to DSLRs for video and expect them to be perfect you probably will be dissapointed

If the GH2 does come out, I hope Panasonic reads and listens to the desired changes most requested and talked about by these and other forums. Sorry to add that, I know this was started as a Canon thread. Hmmm. a full frame mirrorless 4k sensor. That's asking for too much now.

Heating issues are a poor excuse to explain the clip limit. If a Still camera can also double as a continuous capture video device, it will be regarded also as a video camera and taxed accordingly as such. European export models do not have a size limit. I may be corrected on this one, but I've heard and read about it long enough.

Filesize limit is because of the FAT32 formatting of the 7D CF cards, no other reason.

Here's a wiki link with more info under file systems
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CompactFlash#Capacities_and_compatibility

The GH1 uses AVCHD which is a system not a single file so it can get around the limit by spanning multiple files
