CANON: Please make the "Control Dial" to be assignable for ISO changes. It makes me crazy that this is not an assignable button. How great would it be to quickly change your ISO using the dial. Also give us auto-ISO. This functions is on the MK3 but not on the C100.

If you leave the joystick on ISO, it's pretty easy to just click it in and use that to dial the ISO up or down. There's also some talk about the need to black balance after an ISO change, not that everyone does it, but that may be part of the reason it's not as easy to ride ISO on a C100.

Yes, I leave the joystick on the ISO most of the time. It works but if you are not paying attention or you move the highlight off the ISO accidentally, before you know it you are changing the shutter speed and you miss the shoot because you are trying to figure out why you cameras in not working right. Doing a black blannce after a ISO change is not piratical when covering a wedding. Whatever they need to do to make it work, they should do.

That's a pretty poor design if you need to BB after every ISO change. Especially for a camera like the C100 which is designed for quick handheld shooting like doc's and wedding rather than a tripod darling with tons of time between adjustments. Weird.

I agree the one thing that always bugs me is not having ISO on a handy control dial.

+1

I'm sure most dont do this, but Canon recommends black balancing the camera with the body cap on after ISO changes. I doubt they would add a quick change function with this recommendation.

In fact Canon is not the first manufacturer to recommend this, Sony and Panasonic have done the same with some of their cameras. What affects a sensors noise floor the most is temperature changes and gamma radiation. This is why it is recommended to black balance when going from cold to hot conditions (and vice versa) and also to black balance after flying on a plane with a camera.

Black balance is something I should probably do more often, but I tend to only do it when I see visible noise that I feel shouldn't be there. Must become a little more disciplined on this I guess...

I do it every time I start my shoot. Old ENG news photg habit. Much faster on a ENG camera since the switch is on the front of camera under the lens. Up is white and down is black balance. If you had auto iris on it would close the it down. Life with those ENG cameras are so easy but the image of the large sensor wins by miles.

The latest firmware(at least on the 300) allows the ISO to be assigned to the control dial. I tried it for a few minutes and determined that it would be too easy to accidentally change the ISO while shooting.

Concerning BB, when I first started shooting I got in the habit of BB'ing the camera at the beginning of each shoot day. Also, BB BEFORE you WB.

I think auto ISO sounds great on paper, but I would probably not use it on this camera (C100). The 1/3 stop changes that Canon has programmed are way too clunky. I love the way Sony implements ISO changes on the FS series, it's in another league from the EOS-C line. ISO changes are smooth and gradual, no steps noticeable Auto ISO is fantastic on those cameras, but of course so much else isn't. If only we could blend the two lines into one - imagine 4K, great LCD, ergonomic & hand-holdable, EF lenses, great auto features, low noise, tack sharp image, AND SLO-MO! A guy can dream, can't he?

Slid over. I want to dream too. :)

Am I the only one unsure of what the "Control Dial" is???

I like the idea of removed the shutter speed from the menu, although for weddings that might not be ideal. I've noticed some funky strobing with some type of lights during the receptions. To get rid of it I have to change the shutter speed slightly.

The "Control Dial" is the wheel/dial (normally controlled by your index finger) on the C100 handle to change the aperture of the camera. I think it would be wonderful for this dial to be assignable for ISO changes. It would be so dreaming. And/or having AUTO ISO on the C100 would be awesome. Even if they recommend we do black balance after ever ISO change, give us the option and warn us that we should not. I just want the option even if it is not recommended.
