C100: Canon.. is november

It's bit curious. I wouldn't mince words, but these statements are normally crafted with caution.

Here Canon talks about the C100 as a digital video camera, instead of proudly as before: digital cinema camera.

Is Canon altering the C100 to better fit a certain market segment?

Although the C-series is used as a "cinema" camera in certain projects, the name "CinemaEOS" for me clearly always was more marketing than fact.
Formfactor, XLR, codecs, lack of VFRs - these are still (very good) video cameras, aimed at ENG/Event/Documentary.
Can you still shoot a feature with it and win Cannes? Yes.
My guess is, the C100 is selling better and better and the C300 is selling less and less. So they maybe try to at least make the 100 less "sexy". Anyways, looking at the images the RAWed MIII puts out, this hole "CinemaEOS" label becomes kind of a joke anyways - and that coming from a VERY happy C100 shooter;)

If they are changing the sensor - or buggering around with in in any way that might affect the current image - I'd have to pass. I want the current image AND a good AF option (I do love the FS700's 'tap to focus' system), and it appears that this new system will hopefully 'follow' subjects (not necessarily faces). Yes, videographers appreciate a good AF system when you're interviewing/shooting/watching levels/minding the environment...

But not if it means swapping the picture for a lesser one. :)

"autofocus that can be particularly useful for video markets like documentary,
sports, event and wildlife"......P!$$....50p/60p,,,,would make it just as usefull for "sports, event and wildlife". I doubt now they will ever do it.

I'm headed over to the Canon Hollywood Service Center on Friday where I know the folks quite well. I'll see what I can suss out. Any particular questions C100 users want me to ask?

Everything! But I guess one to start is will the dual pixel sensor upgrade keep the C100 image as it stands. And what the upgrade entails. Is it and addition to the existing sensor or a completely new sensor? I believe its the latter but clarification might help.

Can we pay for Slomo? Even if it requires an external recorder!

i think in general, everyone would be happy as a stripper in jello if canon were to offer a couple of paid hardware/software upgrades, so i would just push that, that we like what they're doing with the AF upgrade option, and we'd like to see more paid/premium upgrades.

and not to stoke the fire on what likely will never transpire, but how much would people be willing to pay for such things? they offered the AF for 500....

100mb 4:2:2: $500-800? (price of a ninja-2)
10bit anything: $1000?
60p1080: 4-800? (price of any new consumer camera that does this)
EVF that doth not suck: $700? (starting price of the good EVFs)

Just to put one question to rest, the Canon announcement on DPreview does state "a compatible CMOS sensor was included in the original design of the EOS C100. Following further technical development since launch, the camera can now be upgraded to offer users enhanced functionality and added value. While the underlying Dual Pixel CMOS AF sensor technology in the EOS C100 is similar to that found in the Canon EOS 70D digital SLR, it has been adapted to fit the capabilities of the EOS C100. It has been optimised specifically for video shooting, and provides fast, natural focussing in a familiar visual style. As such, capturing a subject and retaining sharp focus, even when moving, has never been easier." [emphasis added]

Since the CinemaEOS line shares the same sensor (minus the 1D-C), I wonder if they'll consider adding the functionality to the C300 as well?

I would pay for a slow motion option.... also a robust Intraframe codec would be stellar.. the freaking 5DM3 can do this... yet not the more expensive C100.... really? sometimes I think Canon has no clue at all... They make the C-Series nearly awesome... seems like there is always a feature missing though... one that is available in their HDSLR line ups... boggles many a mind..

1280x720 is exactly 1/3 of your sensor array... just saying...

I know there is a Digic III Processor inside and that people say its incapable of 1080 50/60p but I noticed that Canons literature calls it Digic DV III. Significant?

Personally i wouldn't mind paying 300-500 for slowmo.

Yes, it is significant, but when people say the Digic III about the C100, they mean Digic DV III. The DV simply stands for the Digital Video variety of the sensor (different from Digic in DSLRs). Better DSLRs typically use Digic 5+ or better.

...but I wonder if is a turbo charged version for video.

cowpunk. Please ask them about Slo-mo. ...I'd pay 600-700 extra for that....plus this upgrade would still leave it half the cost of the C300. I'd buy two of them with those two features added.

Just echoing some of the other posts, I think the most important question to ask is,
Does the new upgrade change the image quality?

Second most important question:
Is a paid upgrade to add High Frame Rate and/or High Bit Rate a possibility?

Could you ask of this new feature will be integrated to the new C100 selling starting february, or will it remain an option ? Thank !
