C100: Canon.. is november

just want to say, c100 beats 5d3 a million miles internally.

I want that firmware that can beat 5d3 2 million miles! lol

i indeed am quite interested in that stupid high iso, if it's usable that is :)

more importantly we'll finally be able to mag focus properly

Moving the magnification area will be great. No more recomposing to focus!

Is is a one else hoping that Canon will throw in a few nice surprises in this release?? #wishfulthinking

It's 2 pixel continuous auto-focus for all lenses while shooting. Wonder why they would not do this for the C300/C500 as well?

I'm thinking Canon learned something from Sony regarding the FS700 4k upgrade fee for the hardware change. Though is not exactly 4k support. ;)

hold the phone... canon's doing hardware upgrades? as i understood it when i read about that af system in the 70d, it's a hardware thing, not software, and you have to send it into them. so....

that's possibly the best news any cinema series shooter can hope for: canon focusing on these cameras for the long haul

if they took a cue from RED and figured they could sell more of these cameras by offering optional hardware upgrades so they don't go obsolete in a few years...

then the more reasonable of those desires people have for these cameras could come to light

i'd imagine more framerates would be on many people's list

i would personally like to see them scale out the resolutions, something along the lines of..

c500 4k (already)
c300 2.7K (match gopro nicely)
c100 2.5k (ought to raise a BM eyebrow)

or whatever debayers best.

OK, enough of my wishful thinking for tonight

Pretty cool. I have the 70D just for it's focusing ability on steadicam and what not and I welcome this upgrade.

begs the question though.... it gives the impression that this is a sensor level modification, but i cannot imagine them swapping out the sensor for that cost, and if it is a different sensor, what performance variation is there?

something tells me it's more of a tuning than any sort of a addition or modification, even though that's what they imply.

I think Canon are making a statement about this upgrade and the C100 saying its an ideal event/social videographers camera - that's why it's not mentioned on the C300 etc. Just my 2 cents/pence.

I'd pay for firmware that replaced AVCHD - even with something more like the 5D m2 file structure (but higher quality of course) just to get rid of the "Private" folder structure.

It's bit curious. I wouldn't mince words, but these statements are normally crafted with caution.

Here Canon talks about the C100 as a digital video camera, instead of proudly as before: digital cinema camera.

Is Canon altering the C100 to better fit a certain market segment?

Canon's statement said:
The EOS C100 camera with Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology features a CMOS sensor that consists of an array of pixels that each feature two separate photodiodes.

"...with dual pixel technology" and "...a CMOS sensor" (as opposed to cinema CMOS sensor)

I'm scratching my head regarding the two photodiods per pixel. That's not the cinema sensor... or? Is Canon trading some sensor IQ for features desired by the "target market"? If so, would Canon CLEARY communicate that?

I get a feeling that this is an optional update, separate from other firmware upgrades that actually swaps the sensor. Kind of: "if you're into cinema—stick with the cinema sensor. If you do other productions where you want AF—go for the Dual Pixel sensor (with a high priority on image quality). It's up to you."

I certainly hope that this is all about ADDED features and that nothing gets taken away, or is made less than it was.

I was about to buy the C100. Now I'm thinking of waiting till february. Do you think all new cameras will then have the dual sensor ?

Probably. Sony have released a new version of the FS700 called the FS700R with the firmware/hardware update that existing FS700 users now have to pay for.
