NOT A CAMERA. Codec unveil and L & T plugin for FCP.

Edit: Camera came later. Weak.

Umm guys.... canon is making movie theatre chairs.... its in the picture.... duh.

It's corporate poker strategy. It's a small raise before Red and Canon et al. reveal their hand at NAB. Based on how their competitors react or don't react they can either reveal what they got or continue development.

I just got back from the supermeet! it was awesome in every respect, plus i won 300$ worth of plugins for fcp, but anyway....
the canon guy talked mostly about the new robust codec that will be in their new line of prosumer video camera's, I personally asked if this codec will be added to next generation hdslr's and he had a mixed reply/no answer. To be honest I think canon is going to hold back on the codec with the hdslr's so their prosumer line can catch up!

the guy also announced the free plug in coming out that makes fcp log and transfer for canon hdslr's seamless. It should be available soon!

Ooooh. I like this guess.

just what we need moire chairs

I actually choked on my beer I laughed so hard at this!

I'd love to hear more on the plug in for seemless L&T in FCP...that would be sweet:thumbup:
I think smokecat has it right though.

Yay new plugin!

Now I don't have to explain the post workflow to every production I'm working with.

What does it transcode to? The new Mpeg2 codec? Can't wait to find out more.

Well, we got the camera back yesterday, took it out today with the 7D... Put the 7D down after about twenty minutes. I felt like I was playing a joke on myself. There's just no comparing them.

Hopefully someone that can take it more seriously will do one, though!

Wow Kholi. The 7D blew you away so much so that you had to restrain yourselves? Thanks for the warning. I'll start packing camp chairs wherever I go on a shoot with my 7D so that when it all becomes so overwhelming, I can sit down and just absorb the vibe the camera is putting off.

:Drogar-Dum(DBG):

Haha my bad. Was on iPhone. Perry asked me about comparing RED M-X to 7D. That's what I was referring to.

I know, I know. I was joking that you put the 7D down because "it was so much better than M-X," that it literally overwhelmed you.

A botched joke. (in the words of Senator Kerry)

18Mpixels, DIGIC IV, more from the press release:

As the ability to record Full HD video becomes increasingly important, Canon continues to deliver DSLR technology that sets the industry benchmark for multimedia functionality. The EOS 550D records video in full 1920×1080p HD resolution, allowing photographers to select the frame rate preferred from 30, 25 and 24fps, as well as offering 720p video at 60 and 50fps. The EOS 550D also includes a 3.5mm stereo microphone socket, enabling the use of an external microphone when capturing video.

Photographers can also take manual control over exposure settings, changing the depth of field and degree of motion blur to shoot more creatively. To provide the best possible video quality, highlight tone priority (HTP) can be set independently for movie capture, without changing any still image capture settings. In situations where the subject is further away, the EOS 550D Movie Crop function records with the central 640×480 pixel area of the sensor, creating an effective magnification of approximately seven times. The EOS 550D is the first in the EOS range to feature Movie Crop and gives consumers more flexibility to capture important moments which would otherwise be too far away.

Very interesting. It will be good to see how it holds up in resolution tests, moire, and geometric skew. I noticed a max continuous shooting speed of under 4 fps, making me wonder if the sensor reads out rather slowly. Maybe they are using a crop, this time? Lots of questions, no answers!
