Canon Fires Back: 4K DSLR, (that was a fast)

C300 competes and beats the Epic in one critical area: Reliability. Bloom says the Reliability of his Epic is "Hideous" in his words.
In all fairness, Bloom has an Epic M which is the beta version of the Epic. Everyone part of the M program knows that the bugs and issues are all part of the territory. With that being said, Red will actually be ahead of the curve compared to Canon....there are already thousands in the field being used.

+ didn't he just order a Scarlet? :)

2. Step up: Read the writing on the wall. There is a mad man in your market and he's going to throw in the "kitchen sink" at a price point that you've never imagined with specs your engineers weep over. If you don't compete....more and more of your customers will become their customers. Time to break out of your old "shell" and become something new.

....

You might consider that it was Canon that was the madman in jannard's market (albeit by accident) in 2008. The 5DII was a bull in the Red shop offering Vista Vision filmic sensor for $2,500. And even now after everyone has their cards on the table, it's still the most viable contender for many, especially with the VAF-5DII filter that nearly eliminates moire/aliasing. That little cam pushed Jannard from a 2/3rds sensor to S35 in Scarlet. Canon drove the large sensor revolution. Let's not forget our history. Let's thank Canon for making Scarlet what it is today. The DSLR revolution made anything less than S35 unacceptable in a cine video camera.

The C300 is a great cam that produces a superb image. People seem to hate it because they can't afford it more than anything else. It's main fault is that it's priced wrong.

That is a GREAT point! Let's all hope that Canon recovers and TRULY....FIRES.....BACK.....HARD. (And with MALICIOUS intent.) ...so that we can all benefit even more. Cheers f64manray!

I've already said this on another thread, but here's what I'd like to see (that I truly think they could do without taking years to deploy).

Deploy the C300 video features in the round of DSLRs. Keep the same approximate pricing for each group (T4i, 8d, 5dMIII), but give them 4:2:2 (not zero), Same Dynamic Range as the C300, and Full/Clean HDMI out...

Throw in 4:4:4 on the HDMI and now its HISTORIC.

I don't hate it because I can't afford it. Hell, I could buy 2 tomorrow if I wanted them. The problem is what they give you for what it costs. It's a value issue. And frankly, if I am spending my OWN money, it's not there. And I wouldn't ask my employer to spend it either. It's main fault is that it's priced like it's a market leader, when in truth it's not. If someone asks you to plunk down $100k for a Ferrari, you're getting a Ferrari. If someone asks you to plunk down $100k for a Kia, that's a whole different ball of wax. Albeit the Kia may be reliable, may do the job well, etc. The fact is, the value simply isn't there on many fronts. Look at every significant Cinema camera on the market. Arri D20/D21/Alexa, Viper, Si2K, Dalsa, Genesis, RED... what do they ALL have in common? They ALL shoot RAW. It's a requirement for entry into the cinematic game if you want to be taken seriously. Canon was told that in no uncertain terms when the 5D was released and the Hollywood set got their hands on it. Mpeg2 4:2:2 may get it for broadcast, but not for theatrical release. Not on $10M+ budgets. There are far too many other options.

+1000000 on the "value point". AMEN....and....AMEN.

I would say that "C" concept cine DSLR FF 4K recording is about as malicious as it gets. :-) And it will probably be priced around $4-5K in that 1D body, and since it won't be pirating XF camcorder innards and most likely be using dual Digic V processors, there should at least be 60P in that thing. .....but of course, no headphone jack. :-)

Well, I don't disagree, but ya know what, now that everyone has their cards on the table, and if money were no an issue, I'd rather shoot with the C300. I just like it. To my eye, Canon knows their stuff. But money is an issue even though I can afford it. I'm just not gonna pay $20K for it.

Also, I thought Alexa, Genisis only shot 1080, no RAW. Am I wrong?

If this is a 5D Mark III replacement, when should we expect it in the product cycle? Also, do you guys think the 1d x will be able to upgrade to have the 4K 24p mjpeg feature via firmware?

If you want to talk about the pain of shooting on a DSLR, for me it was NEVER the size. It was some simple things that COULD be added to even the current line OUTSIDE of sensor performance. Things like:

- No AGC
- File length limits
- Heating limits
- Zebras
- additional focusing aids
- output resolution or even a signal at all when filming
- waveform or live histogram
- audio meters

Those aren't all huge difficult things to do. Some cameras have fixed some of those, some haven't. THAT is the issue for me. Sure, SDI, XLR would help, but even miniXLR would be a compromise I could live with.

I hope that this mystery VDSLR delivers all this, and I hope they make an S35 version of one as well. Remember, it's FullFrame, so not the same as the C300.

I'd also like to see:
- Mirrorless (I'll use vintage lenses like crazy)
- Full HD out while recording (yeah 7D has it, but ensure all of them have it)
- Headphone output
- 60p 1080 (come on, even a Nex5n can do this - C300? Nope...)
- Just, generally, a better codec. People have said enough about this.

Give me a $2k DSLR repackaged in video form factor with a 1080p OLPF, XLR's and full manual control and I'll happily pay $3k even if it only records in DV!

Come on Sony, Panasonic & Canon - I KNOW you can do it!!!!!!!

They can but probably never will since it'd be a large threat to their video camera line.

How about Nikon? That's the only company that doesn't have video department, but for some reason they haven't come out with a Camera that can match the 5D or GH2 on video. Let's see if 2012 is the year for good quality Cameras, not just for the rich people and big companies but also for the masses. I'm still dreaming...

Does anyone have any more info on the scarlet's ISO rating? I think that's also a huge factor nobody is talking about. The mysteriumX sensor says it does 320-800, but it is technically rated at 320, right?. I saw some people on the red forums guessing a rating in the 500 range....

Personally I would wish they'd take the 1DX with its fantastic ISO and put it in a less robust robust casing to save 2-3 grand. I like shooting stills just as much as video, and with that kind of an ISO rating I would forgo the RAW video recording...

My guess is that eventually, that will happen, but probably will take a year or two to happen. Then again, we all that it was going to happen now after 3+ years of waiting.

Just wait for the 5DMkIII. It'll probably be a pretty awesome still camera. When Planet5D asked Erik Allin from Canon whether there will be a MkIII, he said "Canon always comes out with something to replace what we had before. That's the nature of how we do this. Will there be a replacement for the 5DMkII? Someday. That's what we do."

I think after reading this thread that so many people get hostile and negative too quickly about things which don't matter in the least, real DP's know that they'll shoot on whatever best serves the project's budget and what they get a pay check to use. Canon's announcements are just one more tool to learn because someone will want you to use it at some point if your a shooter, get to know it and Scarlett because you'll most likely use both. For me, as a DP, I'm stoked to use any camera, because that means I'm working. And the camera won't make your movie so don't get hyped when the specs you want aren't there, because if you really need it for a production then you'll let the producer know and they'll build it into the budget or they won't and either way you'll make it work. A good DP is better then any camera, I'd choose to have Roger Deakins with a VHS camera over me with a 65mm IMAX camera every day of the week. And why if the specs matter so much is the Ikonoskop A cam dii never talked about? It's no harder to transcode that footage than Red. Just my 2 cents-Adam
