HOLLYWOOD, California, November 3, 2011/TOKYO, November 4, 2011 – Canon Inc. today announced that the company is developing a new-concept EOS-series digital single-lens reflex (SLR) camera. Incorporating an enhanced version of the video-capture capability offered in the current EOS-series lineup, the new camera will be ideally suited for cinematographic and other digital high-resolution production applications. The model will be equipped with a 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor and, enabling the recording of 4K video* (at a frame rate of 24P, with Motion-JPEG compression), will make possible the type of exceptional image quality and sublime imaging expression to be expected from the next generation of "EOS Movies."

The announcement coincides with the launch of the Cinema EOS System, marking Canon's full-fledged entry into the digital high-resolution production industry. The new professional digital cinematography system spans the lens, digital cinema camera and digital SLR camera product categories.

Further details regarding the new EOS digital SLR camera currently under development, including the product name, specifications and scheduled launch date, have yet to be decided.

EOS Movie: A New Industry Standard
Movie recording has been a standard feature in all newly introduced Canon EOS-series digital SLR cameras since the launch of the EOS 5D Mark II in November 2008. Coupled with the diverse array of lenses in Canon's current interchangeable EF lens lineup, this feature has heralded rich visual expressive possibilities, delivering such characteristics as beautiful image blur and low noise while also garnering kudos for the mobility and maneuverability made possible through the cameras' compact and lightweight body designs.

The impressive images created by the combination of Canon EOS digital SLR cameras and EF lenses, known as "EOS Movies," have already earned their screen credentials on the sets of multiple productions, from television commercials and artist promotion videos to episodic dramas and even major motion pictures.

* Cropped to APS-H-equivalent size (dimensions measuring approximately 80% vertically and horizontally of a 35 mm full-frame sensor) when recording in 4K.

Dang! IT.....IS......ON.......

Let the blood bath begin!!!!!!!!

(This is like something out of a comic book. This would make a great film.)

Canon exec whispers under his breath, the dark board room filled with frowning faces....

He nods his head quickly and a messenger bolts out of the room as fast as he can.

The exec slams his fist on the board room table, startling the woman sitting next to him.

"We'll TEACH that Red Camera who's who around here!!!!"

CU - Bitterly angry eyes narrow....fade to black.

....to be continued.

yes but they just announced the Canon 1dX which is $7,000 and is basically a normal 1080p DSLR. So if this "4k DSLR" comes through it'll probably be $15k or more

I doubt it. The Canon 1DX is their flagship DSLR. Its expensive because its a damn good photo camera and can shoot at incredibly high ISOs super clean.

It is VERY early for me to EVEN suggest this, but, it may be the "Holy Grail" for us all.

I ACTUALLY THINK this announcement was a DIRECT RESPONSE to Red's Announcement. I could be wrong, but I sincerely think that Red Camera Company has finally got what they were "asking for". I think they have "woke the sleeping giant". I think the Nov 3 announcement from Canon was "fine". I think they know that the 10K deal that Red just put out there just DESTROYED their annoucement....(and I find it curious that a Red Epic owner shot some of Canon's footy.....hmmmmm.....I wonder if Red Camera Co KNEW that they HAD to throw in the kitchen sink. I think it's Canon's turn....and I don't think they are ready right now.

(Such as, their 20K cam shoots 1080P....so NOW they have a DSLR announced that shoots 4K????) Uh...I'll only whisper this, but I think that it is EXACTLY that: Canon is going to take DIRECT AIM at Red's Announcement...and try to "out gun them". Canon CAN'T be ready for this right now, ....I wonder how long it will take for them to 'get ready'? I can't WAIT to find out!!!!

Of course....I could be COMPLETELY WRONG. (lol)

Well they never really said the C300 shoots 1080p, they kept calling it a 4K camera because technically the sensor is 4K. I think they are using it as a marketing term. I think they mean the same thing with regards to this DSLR being 4K.

Oh ya, one more thing: Hey Canon! If you are listening, I'm about ready to give Jim Jannard 10K. Wanna stop me?

5DMIII
-4:4:4 native color space (DNxHD 4:4:4 compatible thanks...chat with Avid, they're good for it)
-Clean HDMI out with RAW-DNG video (external recorder compatible)
-2K 60fps, 4K 24fps
-Go ahead and throw in that nice DR you have in your C300 BTW
-3,500USD....I'll even go as high as 5,000USD. 8,000 is cutting it close. 20K? Sorry. :( Jim gets the check.

I'm sure other members of the forum will fill in the rest. (If they're not too busy reading the Scarlet thread) lol

Honestly though....come on Canon, Sony, and Panny. Gotta bring the historic stuff to the table now. No more messing around.

That may well be, roxics. Cheers!

I just don't think Canon is afraid of the Red announcement. In thir mind they probably think the C300 is a good price. They probably justify this thought with the fact the sensor has 4x1080 pixels. They might be right. The images are nice looking. But I just don't think the market is going to play ball with them at that price. They're going to have to drop it $6-7k when it hits the public.

But what this proves to me more than anything is that the Canon stills division and video division are still separate. Obviously they got together to share names "C". But the choice of codecs and sensor size between the two is a little "interesting" considering they are supposed to be the same "line" of cameras. So one would think that uniformity of sensor size and codec would be a priority. But obviously not. So maybe there is still hope for the stills division to deliever us from evil.

The press release on this camera actually came out before the RED announcement...about a half hour before. It was easy to miss because of the hectic activities, but we were all debating this second DSLR camera with the red "C" logo during the Canon Event.

The two divisions are definitely still separate. You can see the heavy influence of the XF cameras on the C300. The C300 uses a new sensor designed specifically for it. It's also using DV Digic III (their video chip) instead of Digic V used in the still cameras.

I'd be willing to bet this is the 1Dx sensor that is using a 4K "crop mode" similar to the current 1080p crop modes on the T3i or GH2. Have to agree this was unexpected

I hear you. I think the easiest expression for tonight's happenings.

You can buy: (2) RAW 4K, 120fps at 1080P cameras = 20K

OR

You can buy: (1) 4:2:2 1080P, 60fps at 720P camera = 20K

THAT is a SERIOUS butt kicking by any measure. Congrats to us all!!!

....and I can't wait to see the response from the big boys. (Of course, maybe they won't respond).

Why on earth would anyone want to shoot video on a DSLR anymore. Its a PITA! We have so many better choices it just blows me away. Go for it and enjoy all the headaches with audio.

here's the thing 4k DSLR doesn't mean SQUAT. The only reason red's 4k is so important is because it is 4k RAW. Canon DSLR is already far higher than 4k. Even the 5d mark II is the equivalent of like 10k sensor (24 megapixels). The whole point is that that 10k sensor is down converting and pixel binning everything because it's a compressed piece of junk. Red's 4k is actual 4k RAW so this new 4k DSLR big deal that means it's a 8 megapixel DSLR and it will NOT be Raw, I highly doubt that cus Canon has no raw proprietary codec like REDRAW so this means it will be the same old 4:2:0 8bit junk mpeg 2 probably down converting everything.

What he said.

I think they threw this in under the radar so it wouldn't hurt the sales of the new flagship (1dx), and because it's not ready yet, but they wanted us to know that they're working on something we're all interested in and have been waiting for.
