Canon FD to EOS Lens Adapter

Is there one that works? I've read that without a lens element, they don't hold infinity focus and even with a lens element they often get stuck on the lens and are sometimes very soft. I've got an old Canon FD lens that I'd really like to use on my 7D if there's an adapter that works out there...

You more or less hit the nail on the head.

Without an element it becomes an extreme macro lens. With an element, they are soft/low contrast/hazy/have bleeding highlights depending on the specific manufacturer. Not really suitable for "normal" shooting, but perhaps useful as an effects lens. I have yet to see an example of one that does provide a more pristine image.

Of course, you could probably get one made, but then you are likely looking at the price of a new lens to replace your FD.

@michael : is what you say from 1st hand experience ?
i've been shooting FDs on both 5D & 7D for a while and didn't notice such problems if you stop down the aperture past f2.8 using both adpters with cheap glass to retain infinity.

those adapters were designed for the more common mass produced lenses which are slow and have a small rear element, hence the small cheap optical glass in the adapter. for flagship L lenses with the bigger rear glass, there is a much light being reflected back into the barrell causing ghosting, blooming and softness indeed... stop down to f4 and it is sharp enough for video

I have experienced exactly what Michael is talking about. I have an fd to eos adapter to use some of my old glass but the images are never sharp and there ore often weird brown hazes or gray hazes over the image.

If it makes any difference: I will be using the Vivitar 120-600mm FD lens on my 7D for video only. I'll also get an FD to Nikon adapter for my wife's D90...she will probably want to take some wildlife stills with it.

I understand that there's "too soft for quality stills" and there's "too soft for 7D video" but they're nowhere near the same.

Would you mind posting the make and manufacture of your adapter and perhaps some test footage with it?

It isn't firsthand experience, no. I haven't purchased an adapter because, as I mentioned, every example I've ever seen shows some extreme form of ghosting, softness, or decreased contrast.

If you have found one that works, I'd be very pleased! I have some decent FD glass sitting around collecting dust!

i have tried both the cheap Bower FD>EOS adapter and the newer AFconfirm from seller jinfinance on ebay with not so bad results as most reported here
both work ok from f2.8 and beyond getting a bit sharper stopped down ; fine enough for video with 5D & 7D too

FD 200mm f2.8 & FD 15mm f2.8 fisheye, bower adapter

FD 15mm f2.8 fisheye, TS 35mm f2.8 tilt-shift & FD 35-105 f3.5, bower adapter

problems arise mostly for wide apertures : my 50f1.2L & 85f1.2L give horrid coma, halos and bloom until stopped down to match the size of the little converter glass. if we could have the same corrective glass at 140% diameter, it would be much better since no light would be reflected back into the lens. i'm looking into getting a glasses plant to machine me such a custom lens in the months to come
