Canon FD lens on Canon 7D Camera

C'mon anyone who seriously thinks the GH1 is a match for the 7D is clearly deranged.
Deranged? Squig, come on...
The GH1 is very, very good. The 7D is pretty much unknown, but with high hopes. If it's jello-city like the 5D, then the GH1 is going to be more than a match for the 7D. At that point it's a case of "pick your poison".

If it's jello-free, then the 7D will have significant advantages over the GH1.

but this is the Canon forum and I'm not talking shi*.
Well, actually, yes you are. You're calling people "deranged" and you're making profoundly aggressive statements that you can't possibly know the answers to yet. Tone it down please.

I totally agree. If 7D has jello like the 5D, then GH1 will be weapon of choice for a lot of people. I'd take less jello over a better bit rate any day. GH1, though only 17mbps bitrate, is pretty good from what I've seen so far too.

Truly hope Philip Bloom's 7D test-drive will reveal if the 7D suffers from bad jello...

So what lenses WILL work, without a ton of hassle, on the 7D?

I was (mistakenly?) under the impression I could buy a relatively inexpensive adapter and use all my Nikkor AI lenses on the 7D.

Wishful thinking? haha...

Off the top of my head, the only SLR lenses that don't work are Canon FD mount and Minolta mounts. Nikon, Pentax, M42, Olympus, and more all work fine. I have a 5D, and I actually have lenses in all four of those mounts for it, plus a Pentacon 6 (medium format) mount. And every one of my lenses has its own adapter.

17mbps is proven to be good enough for 1080p on many cameras but honestly the GH1 isn't one of them! Hopefully this will be solved on the next iterration and all will be well in the Universe :)

17mbps works very well on the GH1 in many circumstances. The GH1's recorded footage can be spectacular. You're making it sound like it doesn't work at all, and it most definitely does work!

I know that putting an optical element in the light path to act as a weak extender will allow FD's and Minolta MD's to work on Canons. But the problem seems to be finding an optical adapter of any real quality. I'm sure if someone was serious about it - they could make an optical adapter that doesn't degrade the image much. Can you tell me what the make of your adapter was?

I had some FDs laying around when I picked up my 5d. The truth is that I have had a lot of luck with them. That being said, success is different from lens to lens. I have gotten great images with a 35mm 2.8 and a 135mm 2.8, but there are definitely visual issues on two separate 50 1.4s that I have used.

You do lose about a stop of light, but I use my 135mm 2.8 all the time. It's incredibly sharp for being passed through another piece of glass - consistently impresses me. Wish I had some work to post up, but will soon. I have a bunch of footage of cheetahs I shot in Africa on that lens, turned out amazingly.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that it doesn't work at all. But it is better implemented on other cameras. Here's a prediction, Panny will get it right on the next version and we'll never have to revist these debates :)

I guess a better way to term it is it is not as good as it could be....but definitely it works. :)

What kind of adapter will I need to mount my Nikon primes onto the 7D? Just a different mount, or will I need something optical to make them work?

Yeah I am sure the GH2 will use better compression but the GH1 isn't really here yet.

I know :(
And seriously even with the 7D out I would still buy the GH1 for its 720p performance, kit lens and auto focus prowess... soon hopefully. On a brighter note the 7D will distract buyers away from the GH1 when they actually resurface.

I'm planning on getting an FD adapter. From what I've read from FD-to-EOS adapter users, you can actually remove the glass element from the adapter and it basically just becomes an extension tube. Apparently, you do lose the ability to focus to infinity, though, but at least it's not another glass element of questionable quality. Not sure about the "magnification" factor, but it will most certainly have less light loss.

I have almost a dozen FD lenses left over from my LetusXL days, including a 55mm F1.2 SSC lens. I'm REALLY hoping I can make use of that lens when my 7D comes in.

so would a Nikon 50mm 1.8 Nikor be just as good as the mentioned Canon 50mm 1.8 for $100? If I just have to buy a $18 adapter that would save some stress...

IDK, the USM AF that lets you just grab the ring and twist when you want to manually focus + the metering seems like nice stuff to me.

yes...I'm not saying that it auto focuses while you're recording video but it does auto-focus and you don't have to throw the auto focus switch into manual focus to manually focus...you just turn the focus ring. (AFAIK)
